The proportion of Australian adults suffering anxiety grew by more than 50% between 2007 and 2012, Roy Morgan Research shows. In the year to December 2012, almost 2.5 million Australian adults (13.8%) had anxiety—up from just under 1.5 million five years ago (9.0% of 2007 population).

A similar proportional increase has occurred among both men and women, with women continuing to suffer anxiety at almost double the rate of men: 17.8% of women suffered anxiety in 2012 (up from 11.6% in 2007), compared with 9.7% of men (up from 6.4%).

Stress was reported by 23.8% of Australian adults in 2012, although this has only increased around 4% since 2007.

Nick Williams, Healthcare Consultant, Roy Morgan Research, says:

“The incidence of anxiety has grown by 53% in Australia over the past five years and is now reported by around 2.5 million adults. Combined with a 4% growth in the incidence of Australians reporting stress, this has contributed to a decline in the mean Psychological Wellbeing Score over the past five years from 100 points in 2007 to 99.3 today.”
