State if the Nation 17: After the Federal Election Economic & Financial Issues, despite falling, are still the biggest problems facing Australia (40%, down 9%) and the World (33%, down 15%)

In Australia, a cross-section of 627 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of October 29/30, 2013. Respondents were asked: “Firstly, what do you think is the most important problem facing the World today?” and “What do you think is the most important problem facing Australia today?” State of the Nation Report 17 - Spotlight on Media Futures.

In October 2013, Australians still believe Economic & Financial issues are the most important set of problems facing Australia (40%, down 9% since August 2013) and the World (33%, down 15%) according to the latest Roy Morgan Research.

Australian views on Problems facing Australia

When asked about the most important problem facing Australia, Economic & Financial issues are named by 40% of Australians (down 9% since August 2013). This includes the Economy, Economic problems and Interest Rates 14% (down 7%), Unemployment 9% (down 2%), Poverty and the Gap between the rich and poor 3% (unchanged), Cost of Living/ Rising prices/ Inflation 2% (down 2%) and Housing affordability 2% (up 2%). In this latest survey disapproval of the Carbon Tax was mentioned by less than 1%.

A group of issues labelled Government Policy/ Immigration/ Human Rights are named by 17% (unchanged) of Australians including the related government policy issues of Refugees and Asylum seeker problems 9% (down 3%) and Immigration/ Immigration policy 3% (up 1%).  Politics and Leadership was named by 8% (unchanged) as the most important problem facing Australia.

Environmental issues are now mentioned by 13% (up 6%) of Australians as the most important problem facing Australia. The most important Environmental Issues mentioned are Climate Change/ Global Warming 9% (up 5%) and Other Environmental issues 2% (unchanged).

Some 8% of Australians (down 1%) mentioned a social issue as the most important problem facing Australia. The two most important Social Issues mentioned were Education 3% (unchanged) and Social apathy/ Family breakdown/ Selfishness/ Moral decline 2% (unchanged).

Analysing by State shows the biggest problems according to people in NSW are The Economy/ Economic problems and Interest rates (20%), Refugees and Asylum seeker problems (9%), Politics/ Leadership (9%), Climate Change/ Global warming (8%) and unemployment (8%). The biggest problems according to people in Victoria are The Economy/ Economic problems and Interest rates (12%), Unemployment (10%), Politics/ Leadership (9%) and Climate change/ Global warming (9%) and the biggest problems according to people in Queensland are The Economy/ Economic problems and Interest rates (12%), Unemployment (11%) and Refugees and Asylum seeker problems (9%).

In Western Australia the biggest problems are Refugees and Asylum seeker problems (15%), The Economy/ Economic problems and Interest rates (12%), and Climate Change/ Global warming (8%). According to people in South Australia the biggest problems are The Economy/ Economic problems and Interest rates (12%), Refugees and Asylum seeker problems (10%) and Unemployment (9%) while according to the people in Tasmania the biggest problems are Unemployment (23%), Politics/ Leadership (14%), Other Health issues (13%), the Economy/ Economic problems and Interest rates (11%) and Climate Change/ Global Warming (11%).

Australian views on Problems facing the World

The biggest World problems are Economic & Financial issues (33%, down 15% since August 2013). Within the broad group of Economic issues 12% (down 11%) mentioned the Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates ahead of Poverty and the Gap between rich and poor 10% (down 2%), Overpopulation (4%, unchanged) and Unemployment (3%, down 2%).

Just behind were Environmental issues (mentioned by 30% of Australians, up 13%) as the next biggest problem facing the World today – this is the highest Environmental Issues have been since July 2011 – 32%. The most important Environmental issue is clearly Climate Change/ Global warming 18% (up 8%) followed by Famine/ Food shortages 5% (up 1%) and other Environmental Issues 3% (unchanged).

Terrorism/ Wars/ Security and Safety are mentioned by 10% (unchanged). Social Issues (9%, up 2%) is next followed by Religion/ Immigration/ Politics/ Leadership 8% (unchanged) as the most important problem facing the World.

Michele Levine, CEO Roy Morgan says:

“After the Coalition’s comprehensive victory in September’s Federal Election, Economic and Financial issues have dropped in importance for Australians, but still remain the ‘most important problems’ facing Australia (40%, down 9% since August 2013) and the World (33%, down 15%).

”Most of the fall for Australia was driven by a drop in those citing The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates 14% (down 7%) and Unemployment 9% (down 2%) as concerns. After the successful resolution of the US Government shutdown and US debt ceiling negotiations in mid-October, concern about the World issue of The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates also fell substantially to 12% (down 11%).

“Environmental concerns rose most prominently. In Australia now 13% (up 6%) cite Environmental Issues as the most important problem – the highest since May 2012, mostly driven by the increase in those mentioning Climate change/ Global warming 9% (up 5%). The increase follows recent devastating bushfires in New South Wales. Environmental Issues rose even more strongly as a problem facing the World to 30% (up 13%). This rise was also driven strongly by a large increase in those mentioning Climate change/ Global warming 18% (up 8%).

“The rise in concern about Climate change/ Global warming comes as the world meets in Poland over the next two weeks to discuss global action on the issue and at the same time as the devastating Typhoon Haiyan swept through the Philippines in the last few days leaving terrible devastation behind.”

These findings come from a special Roy Morgan telephone survey conducted in Australia on attitudes towards issues facing Australia and the World in the future.

In Australia, a cross-section of 627 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of October 29/30, 2013. Respondents were asked: “Firstly, what do you think is the most important problem facing the World today?” and “What do you think is the most important problem facing Australia today?”

The research conducted was both qualitative (in that people were asked to use their own words) and quantitative (in that the ‘open-ended’ responses were analysed and ‘coded’ so that the results could be counted and reported as percentages).
