Economic & Financial Issues are still the biggest problems facing Australia (42%, up 3%) and the World (33%, down 1%) after Treasurer Joe Hockey hands down his first Federal Budget

In Australia, a cross-section of 638 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of June 3-5, 2014. Respondents were asked: “Firstly, what do you think is the most important problem facing the World today?” and “What do you think is the most important problem facing Australia today?”

In June 2014, Australians still believe Economic & Financial issues are the most important set of problems facing Australia (42%, up 3% since February 2014) and the World (33%, down 1%) according to the latest Roy Morgan Research conducted in June.

Australian views on Problems facing Australia

When asked about the most important problem facing Australia, Economic & Financial issues are named by 42% of Australians (up 3% since February 2014). Important Economic & Financial issues include the Economy, Economic problems and Interest Rates 12% (unchanged), Unemployment 8% (down 3%), The 2014 Federal Budget (6%), Poverty and the Gap between the rich and poor 4% (unchanged), Cost of living Issues/ Rising prices/ Inflation 2% (up 1%) and Globalisation/ Fairer trade 2% (up 1%).

The second most important set of issues covering Government/ Leadership from Politicians/ Leadership/ The Prime Minister Tony Abbott was mentioned by 18% (up 7%) of Australians including 4% who mentioned Prime Minister Tony Abbott as being the most important problem facing Australia.

A further 12% (up 1%) of Australians mentioned a Social Issue as the most important problem. The most important Social Issues mentioned were Education 3% (unchanged), Social apathy/ Family breakdown/ Selfishness/ Moral decline 3% (unchanged) and Social welfare/ Welfare dependency (3%).

Another group of issues labelled Religion/ Immigration/ Human Rights are named by 9% (down 7%) of Australians including the related policy issues of Refugees and Asylum seeker problems 4% (down 5%) and Immigration/ Immigration policy 2% (unchanged).

Perhaps surprisingly, Environmental issues are mentioned by just 7% (down 3%) of Australians as the most important problem facing Australia. The most important Environmental Issues mentioned are Climate Change/ Global Warming 4% (down 2%) and Other Environmental issues 1% (down 2%).

Analysis by State

Analysing by State shows different problems rated as most important across different States.

  • New South Wales: Politics/ Leadership/Tony Abbott (19%); The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates (10%); The Federal Budget (9%) and Social Welfare/Welfare Dependency (5%).
  • Victoria: Unemployment (13%); The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates (12%); Politics/ Leadership/ Tony Abbott (12%) and Poverty/ The gap between the rich and poor (7%).
  • Queensland: Politics/ Leadership / Tony Abbott (22%); The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates (17%); Unemployment (5%) and Climate Change/ Global Warming (4%).
  • Western Australia: Politics/ Leadership/ Tony Abbott (22%); Unemployment (13%; The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates (7%) and Poverty/ The Gap between the Rich and Poor (7%).
  • South Australia: Unemployment (15%); Politics/ Leadership/ Tony Abbott (14%); The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates (14%); Health Issues (8%) and Climate Change/ Global warming (8%).
  • Tasmania: The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest Rates (19%); Unemployment (17%); Other Health Issues (15%); Education (12%), Wars & Conflicts (6%) and the Federal Budget (6%).

Australian views on Problems facing the World

The biggest World problems are once again Economic & Financial issues (33%, down 1% since February 2014). Within the broad group of Economic issues, Poverty/ the Gap between the Rich and Poor was mentioned by 14% (unchanged) followed by the Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates 6% (down 2%) ahead of Overpopulation (4%, up 1%) and Unemployment (2%, down 2%).

Environmental Issues were mentioned by 24% of Australians (up 1%) as the biggest problem facing the World today. The most important Environmental issue is clearly Climate Change/ Global warming 13% (unchanged) followed by Famine/ Food shortages 5% (unchanged) and other Environmental Issues 4% (unchanged).

Social Issues are the next biggest problem according to 13% (unchanged) of Australians. Social Apathy/ Family breakdowns/ Selfishness/ Moral decline was mentioned by 4% (down 1%), a further 2% (up 1%) mentioned Education, 2% (down 1%) mentioned Greed/ Materialism and 2% (unchanged) mentioned Anger/ Violence and Aggression.

Despite the continuing civil wars in Syria and Ukraine, and now renewed problems in Iraq, only 9% (down 2%) of Australians mention Terrorism/ Wars/ Security & Safety as the biggest problem facing the World.

Michele Levine, CEO Roy Morgan says:

“The latest Roy Morgan qualitative and quantitative research shows Economic and Financial issues (42%, up 3% since February 2014) are the ‘most important problems’ facing Australia after Treasurer Joe Hockey handed down his first Federal Budget in May. In addition 33% (down 1%) of Australians regard Economic and Financial issues as the ‘most important problems’ facing the World in June.

“The most important Economic and Financial problems facing Australia include The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates (12%, unchanged), Unemployment (8%, down 3%), the Federal Budget itself (6%) and Poverty and the gap between the rich and the poor (4%, unchanged).

“The other problem mentioned by many Australians is Government/ Politics/ Leadership/ Tony Abbott (18%, up 7%). Although many Australians regard Politics/ Leadership (10%, down 1%) as a big problem, many Australians cite Prime Minister Tony Abbott (4%) as the biggest problem by himself. The last time the combined issues of Politics/ Leadership rated close to this level was a year ago in July 2013 (16%), at the time Kevin Rudd replaced Julia Gillard as Prime Minister. Perhaps surprisingly, only 7% (down 3%) of Australians regard Environmental issues as a big problem facing Australia.

“Analysing by State shows Economic issues remain clearly the biggest problem in Victoria (48%), Western Australia (48%), South Australia (46%) and Tasmania (45%) compared to 35% in New South Wales. The biggest Economic issues are The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates: Tasmania (19%), Queensland (17%), South Australia (14%) and Victoria (12%) and Unemployment: Tasmania (17%), South Australia (15%), Victoria (13%) and Western Australia (13%).

“The issues of Government/ Politics/ Leadership/ Tony Abbott are regarded as a huge problem in Queensland (22%), Western Australia (22%) and New South Wales (19%) while Social issues are a big problem in Tasmania (22%) and New South Wales (16%). In addition Health issues are a prominent issue for people in Tasmania (15%) and South Australia (8%).

“The biggest Economic problems facing the World are Poverty and the gap between rich and poor 14% (unchanged), The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates 6% (down 2%) and Over-population (4%, up 1%). Other significant problems include Climate change/ Global warming 13% (unchanged), Famine and food shortages (5%, unchanged) and Wars and conflicts 6% (down 1%). The instability in Iraq is likely to see this rise in the coming months if it continues to deteriorate.”

These findings come from a special Roy Morgan telephone survey conducted in Australia on attitudes towards issues facing Australia and the World in the future.

In Australia, a cross-section of 638 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of June 3-5, 2014. Respondents were asked: “Firstly, what do you think is the most important problem facing the World today?” and “What do you think is the most important problem facing Australia today?”

The research conducted was both qualitative (in that people were asked to use their own words) and quantitative (in that the ‘open-ended’ responses were analysed and ‘coded’ so that the results could be counted and reported as percentages).
