The next most important set of issues labelled Religion/ Immigration/ Human Rights are named by 9% (up 1%) of Australians including the related policy issues of Immigration/ Immigration policy 3% (up 1%) and Refugees and Asylum seeker problems 2% (unchanged). Environmental issues are mentioned by only 6% (down 3%) of Australians as the most important problem facing Australia and Terrorism/ Wars/ Security issues fell sharply to only 3% (down 8%).

Australian views on Problems facing the World

The biggest World problems are now equally Terrorism/ Wars/ Security 27% (down 16% since January 2015) and Economic & Financial issues 27% (up 8%). Within Terrorism/ Wars/ Security, Terrorism was mentioned by 15% (down a large 20%), Wars and Conflicts 7% (up 2%) and Security/ Safety 2% (unchanged).

Within Economic/ Financial Issues, Poverty/ The gap between the rich and poor was mentioned by 10% (up 3%) followed by the Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates 8% (up 3%), Over-population 3% (up 1%) and Unemployment 3% (unchanged).

Environmental Issues were mentioned by 16% of Australians (up 2%) as the biggest problem facing the World today. The most important Environmental issue is clearly Climate Change/ Global warming 11% (up 1%) followed by Famine/ Food shortages 2% (up 1%) and Other Environmental Issues 2% (unchanged).

Government/ Politics/ Leadership/ Human rights are mentioned as being the World’s biggest problem by 10% (up 1%) – including Religion/ Religious fundamentalism 5% (unchanged). Social Issues are the next biggest problem according to 9% (up 1%) of Australians. Social Apathy/ Family breakdowns/ Selfishness/ Moral decline are mentioned by 2% (down 2%) of Australians.

Michele Levine, CEO Roy Morgan says:

“The latest Roy Morgan qualitative and quantitative research shows Economic and Financial issues 49% (up 11% since January 2015) are easily the ‘most important problems’ facing Australia. The sharp increase in these issues in the last few months comes after the steep falls in the prices of several key commodities – including Australia’s biggest exports of iron ore and coal, and also as Australia prepares for the Coalition Government’s second Federal Budget in a few weeks. The biggest Economic & Financial issues for Australians are The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates 15% (up 6%) and Unemployment 13% (unchanged). These issues are prominent in every State of Australia.

“Other important problems facing Australia include Social Issues 13% (unchanged), Government/ Politics/ Leadership/ Tony Abbott 10% (down 1%) and Religion/ Immigration/ Human Rights issues 9% (up 1%). In contrast Environmental Issues 6% (down 3%) have dropped to their lowest ever level of concern as a problem facing Australia since interviewing began a decade ago in 2005.

“When considering the most important problems facing the World, Terrorism/ Wars/ Security issues 27% (down 16%) and Economic and Financial issues 27% (up 8%) are mentioned as the equal ‘most important problems’ facing the World.  The big drop for Terrorism related issues is not surprising given the Charlie Hebdo shootings were fresh in the mind earlier in the year and the rise in Economic and Financial issues comes as the problems surrounding the Greek economy once again have come to the fore in recent months. There appears to be a high possibility of a Greek default with uncertain consequences for the global economy in the next few months.

“The most important Terrorism/ Wars/ Security issues mentioned include Terrorism 15% (down a large 20%) and Wars & conflicts 7% (up 2%) while Poverty/ The gap between the rich and the poor 10% (up 3%) and The Economy/ Economic problems/ Interest rates 8% (up 3%) were the most prominent Economic & Financial issues. Other important problems facing the World include Environmental issues 16% (up 2%) – including Climate change/ Global warming 11% (up 1%) and Government/ Politics/ Leadership 10% (up 1%) and Social issues 9% (up 1%).”

These findings come from a special Roy Morgan telephone survey conducted in Australia on attitudes towards issues facing Australia and the World in the future. The research conducted was both qualitative (in that people were asked to use their own words) and quantitative (in that the ‘open-ended’ responses were analysed and ‘coded’ so that the results could be counted and reported as percentages).

In Australia, a cross-section of 598 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of April 14-16, 2015. Respondents were asked: “Firstly, what do you think is the most important problem facing the World today?” and “What do you think is the most important problem facing Australia today?”

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
