Australians continue to read their local papers, the latest Roy Morgan Community Newspaper Readership results for the 24 months to March 2015 show.
In Sydney, the hills are alive with the sound of pages turning. Readership of the Hills Shire Times grew 13.2% to 86,000 and the Hornsby Advocate rose 20.6% to 76,000. Also up north, the Manly Daily’s Saturday edition grew 9.9% to 133,000, while its weekday editions held steady with over 100,000 readers per average issue. However the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader remains the most-read community paper in the state, unchanged with an average 194,000 readers per issue. Overall, Sydney’s community paper readership held steady with 2,209,000 people reading local newspapers.
In Melbourne, the Waverley/Oakleigh Monash Leader scored 12.9% growth to 96,000 readers to become the most-read community paper in Victoria. Next door neighbour the Caulfield Glen Eira/Port Phillip Leader also did well, growing 13.4% to 76,000 readers. However last year’s two most-read papers, the Geelong Independent and Geelong News, both shed nearly a fifth of their readers. Net community paper readership in the Melbourne region is overall down 1.4% to 1,867,000.
In Brisbane, the aptly titled Brisbane News is the standout success, growing 25.3% to 109,000 readers, with other good results for the South-East Advertiser (up 21.9% to 78,000) and Southern Star (up 16.2% to 79,000). Smaller publications with double-digit growth include the Bayside & Northern Suburbs Star (up 23.3% to 53,000), Caboolture News (up 17.0% to 55,000), City North News (up 16.7% to 21,000), Ipswich Advertiser (up 14.0% to 49,000) and Caboolture Shire Herald (up 12.5% to 45,000). Single-digit growth for widely read publications including Albert & Logan News, North-West News, and Westside News also helped give the Brisbane region a net gain of 11.9%, or an extra 100,000 readers, to 938,000.
In Perth, good news was harder to come by. The Guardian Express, Perth Voice, and Western Suburbs Weekly each gained 5,000 readers but many others lost ground. Overall, net readership in Perth was hardest hit of all the capitals, down 4.5% to 802,000.
In Adelaide, the many Messengers were a mixed bag. While the Northern Messenger grew 20.6% to 76,000 readers, the Weekly Times Messenger grew 10.9% to 71,000, and the Portside Messenger grew 4.7% to 45,000, all others fell. This drove down the Adelaide region’s net readership 1.2% to 583,000.

The total readership of News Limited papers rose just under 1%, to 5,062,000, driven by outstanding 13.2% growth in total Quest readership in Queensland and a steady overall result for the NewsLocal network in NSW.
Fairfax’s publications maintained a combined reach of just over a million across NSW and Victoria, down 2.8% compared with the 24 months to March 2014.
Tim Martin, General Manager - Media, Roy Morgan Research, says:
“These latest Roy Morgan Community Readership results show that the local news industry is holding ground, especially when compared with metro dailies over the period.
“This positive result illustrates the continuing need for accurate monitoring and differentiation of local newspapers.”
