cati The Work — Face to Face Interviewing

Interviews are conducted door to door in the homes of local residents. You ask the respondents the questions exactly as written and record their answers. There is no selling involved, we are just gathering opinions on consumer, social and political issues.

All information is kept confidential and official identification is provided to reassure the public that interviewers are working for Roy Morgan Research.

Interviewing Hours

Interviewers are required to conduct 8 face to face interviews per weekend during daylight hours. Interviewers should commence interviewing on the Saturday morning and finish their last assignment by late Sunday afternoon.

How long does the interview take?
The interview itself can take an average of 1 hour. This is an average, and is entirely dependant upon how many topics are relevant to the respondent. It can be as short as 45 minutes or as long as 90 minutes.

Who will I have to interview?
Interviews are usually conducted close to your home, either in your electoral region or a neighbouring electoral region. You will be given a starting address and asked to work from there. Interviewers begin at the starting address and continue from door to door to interview willing participants.

Availability of work
The work is flexible and you work when you choose, within agreed weekend. We would like interviewers to be able to commit to an average of two weekends per month. However, it is entirely up to you, you can work every weekend if the work is available in your area.

Term of Employment
Roy Morgan Research Interviewers work as casual employees under a collective agreement.  A TFN must be supplied.

One interviewer of Wurruk, VIC sent a note, ‘All the people I interviewed were lovely and most must have been lonely because all wanted to chat. Some wanted to chat and chat and chat. I didn’t think that I was ever going to get away from my first interview. Another had a cushion with a cross-stitch that read: - ‘Men, coffee and chocolate. The richer the better!’

One Interviewer from Dangar Island, NSW remarked “Respondent #4 was a male in his early 30s. When I commenced the interview, he was alone in the apartment and yhis partner arrived as we started to do the demographic questions. When I came to the marital status question, the respondent indicated his answer as ‘de facto’, then he said no, I will change that answer ‘planning to marry’. His girlfriend leant forward and asked “Do you want to marry me?” He replied “Yes! What do you think?” She said “Of course I will” and they embraced.
I finished the interview, left the poll booklets congratulated them once again and thought “Who says romance is dead?”

One interviewer of Cannon Hill, QLD reports, ‘I met a very interesting lady who mixes with members of parliament. She has travelled widely overseas and has even spoken to the wife of an earlier President of the United States. She is most obviously a people person. She considers it a helpful thing to do surveys.’

One interviewer of Nambour, QLD wrote, ‘One elderly gentleman who was putting a train set together for his grandson gladly interrupted this task to allow me to interview him. Then there was another elderly gentleman who had been a fighter bomber pilot during the 2nd world war and was shot down after hostilities had ceased and was helped by the French underground after parachuting out. Met some interesting characters. One of the benefits of the job.’

Some of the Adventures and Perks of Being an RMR Interviewer

One interviewer of Ulverstone, TAS describes one call, ‘After interviewing respondent #8, he showed me his home brew in operation. He had 500 stubbies laid down and 2 brews maturing. One interviewer of Maroubra, NSW described one call, ‘Called on one house that was a ‘call-back’. As I walked into the backyard, I could see that a family & friends BBQ was happening. I waved and said ‘It’s ok, I can see you’re busy…’ (ready to back out and go next door). All these people looked up and called ‘Come over, come over’. I thought they were talking to someone behind me. ‘Er…’ I said ‘Do you know who I am?’. ‘Yes’ said the wife ‘I’m ready to do the poll…’. I couldn’t believe it. We went under the verandah and did the poll. I was apologising for breaking up the party but she was fine. That night I had BBQ meat and salad for dinner. They insisted I take some food! My best ever result…yum, yum.’

One interviewer of Keperra, QLD observed, ‘It is truly great doing this job. It helps you see another side of life. Also helps if you are looking to buy Real Estate — you can see what a particular area has to offer.’
