Gary Morgan - Open Letter - Re: WPP's approach to buy TNS

To All,

WPP should not be allowed to own TNS - FULL STOP.

WPP are one of the world’s largest advertising groups.

WPP owning TNS, the second largest media research company, would result in an untenable anti-competitive situation.

In addition, in Australia WPP operates a Joint Venture with Nielsen (Oztam) and conducts the Australian TV ratings — a merger with TNS would eliminate the major competitor.

If there is any doubt about the sheer might of the combined WPP TNS company, last year the Kantar Group (owned by WPP) made UK£104.3m while TNS made UK£58.2m. Their main competitor, Nielsen, lost US$282m (in 2006 Nielsen lost US$368m).  Linked are the profits to Dec 2007 of the world’s major market research companies, published this month by Inside Research.
