Application of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2006 Census Population estimates to Roy Morgan Research Single Source Weighting
October 2008. Application of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2006 Census Population estimates to Roy Morgan Research Single Source WeightingRoy Morgan Research population estimates are calculated on trends in ABS published Statistical Local Area (SLA) population estimates, supported by other ABS published information. These ABS small-area estimates are revised when results from a new Census become available. However, as the Census is only undertaken every five years there will be a shift, be it up or down, in the population estimates of certain regions. Roy Morgan Research Single Source data released from October 2008 will be in accordance with the 2006 Census of Population and Housing conducted by the ABS. For the 2006 Census there was a major change with the revision of the Brisbane Statistical Division boundary and similarly the Gold Coast area boundary. This not only affects the Brisbane population, but has a knock-on effect for all Roy Morgan Regions in Queensland. (See ABS Publication 1216.0 - Statistical Geography Volume 1 - Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC), Jul 2006) The following table shows the main population changes in the Queensland Regions as reported in Roy Morgan Single Source.
In the other States and Territories, although there have been negligible changes to region boundaries, there are still some fluctuations in the region population estimates. Again this is due to the five year gap in the benchmarking of the population. In New South Wales, the population for Central Sydney increases by 35,000 — from 654,000 to 689,000. This increase is largely offset by a fall of 27,000 in the South Western Sydney region from approximately 505,000 to 478,000. Overall, the population of New South Wales was unchanged. |
