IMPORTANT NOTE TO ROY MORGAN SINGLE SOURCE SUBSCRIBERS : Statistics New Zealand changes to population estimates

February 2009

Statistics New Zealand revises the population benchmarks used in the Household Labour Force Survey every five years, following the Census of Population and Dwellings. The December 2008 release of the Household Labour Force Survey published by Statistics New Zealand was the first edition to include revised population benchmarks from the 2006 Census.

Roy Morgan Research population estimates are calculated by applying the latest quarterly Household Labour Force Survey estimates (at a National, five-year age group level) to the results of the latest Census (at a sub-national, single-year age by gender break). As the 2001 Census is still the basis of our weighting the only discernable shifts in population would be by age group and total population.

In incorporating the revised population benchmarks from the Household Labour Force Survey, we can report that the new national population estimate for people 14+ has increased by 11,320 from 3,362,140 people in February 2009 to 3,373,460 (up 0.3%). Population benchmarks by age group have generally remained stable. The 25-29 group grew by 2,317 (up 0.9%) and the 65+ group grew by 3,362 (up 0.7%), with other age groups trending consistently.

These new estimates apply to Roy Morgan Single Source data for February 2009 and later months. Phasing in of the new Statistics New Zealand population estimates will minimise their impact. Previously released data will not be amended.
