46% Of Australians Have Been Abused By Someone They Work With 50% Have Been Abused By Public While Working And 84% Have Been Abused On Australian Roads

Finding No. 3091 - Published exclusively in the Bulletin, cover date June 9, 1998. : June 09, 1998

Just under half (46%) of all Australians have been abused (either verbally of physically) by someone they work with, 50% have been abused by a member of the public while carrying out their job and 84% have been on the receiving end of some type of aggressive "road rage" behaviour, the Bulletin-Morgan Poll finds.

Just under half (46%) say they have experienced verbal abuse at work from either a manager or co-worker and 7% say they have experienced physical abuse from a manager or co-worker. Slightly more than half (52%) say they haven't experienced any abuse at work, while 2% have never worked.

Nearly all of those who have experienced physical abuse from either a manager or co-worker have also experienced verbal abuse (7% of Australians).

Australians are slightly more likely to say that they have been on the receiving end of verbal abuse from a co-worker (35%) than a manager or supervisor (31%).

As well, they are slightly more likely to say they have been on the receiving end of physical abuse from a co-worker (5%) than a manager or supervisor (3%).

As to whether Australians have ever received abuse (either verbal or physical) from members of the public while doing their jobs, 50% say they have been verbally abused, 10% say they have been physically abused, 33% say they haven't been abused and 17% have never worked with the public.

Again, nearly all of those who have experienced physical abuse from a member of the public have also experienced verbal abuse (10% of Australians).

On the question of abuse on the roads, 84% of Australians say they have experienced aggressive "road rage" behaviour.

From a list of six types of "road rage", rude gestures (75%) and verbal abuse (62%) are the most mentioned types of "road rage" Australians have experienced from another road user.

Other types of "road rage" Australians have experienced are:

chased by another vehicle (20%);

had damage done to vehicle (10%);

physically attacked (4%);

someone respondent with was physically attacked (4%); and

something else (3%).

Although not on the list, tailgating is mentioned voluntarily by 1% of Australians.

Only 16% of Australians say they have never experienced any of those types of road rage.

These are the main findings of the latest Bulletin-Morgan Poll which was conducted by telephone among 641 men and women aged 14 and over throughout Australia on May 20/21, 1998.
