'Texas' Bombs Down Under

Finding No. 3683 - October 21, 2003

At the Australian Junior Chamber of Commerce National Convention in Melbourne on Friday, October 17, 44 young business leaders viewed leading political commentator Laurie Oakes' interview with President George W. Bush with a healthy degree of cynicism.

The Worm

The delegates' responses were measured with The Worm , which tracks how positively or negatively each respondent feels about what they're seeing and hearing, second by second. Developed by Roy Morgan Research, The Worm is such a powerful analytical research tool, it has been accused of influencing the course of elections of several countries

When President Bush praised the efforts of Aussies, saying “the Australian military performed brilliantly”, he obviously hit a positive chord in the psyche of the young business leaders.

However , The Worm dived when President Bush stated that he hadn't been to Australia but 'they tell me it's a lot like Texas'. Clearly, young Australian business leaders consider the comparison with Texas more as an insult than a compliment.

Gary Morgan, Executive Chairman of Roy Morgan Research says:

"If President Bush had said something like 'I'm from Texas so, of course, I love Texas, and I hear Australia is a bit like Texas', his comment would have been much better received.

"Perhaps Queenslanders would have appreciated being likened to Texans, but future leaders in Melbourne do not.”
