Job Seeker's Highest June Quarter Since 2001, June Quarter Unemployment Drops to 8.3%
| Finding No. 3754 -
July 09, 2004 |
The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate fell in the June 2004 Quarter, with estimated unemployment at 8.3%. This is down 0.6% from the March 2004 Quarter, but slightly higher than the June 2003 Quarter (8.0%).
An estimated 819,000 Australians were looking for work in the June 2004 Quarter. This is 80,000 lower than in the March 2004 Quarter, but is the highest June Quarter since 2001 (before the bombing of the World Trade Centre on September 11) when 942,000 people were looking for work.
Since March, the number of Australians working full-time has decreased 170,000 to 6,209,000 and the number of Australians working part-time rose 67,000 to 2,869,000 resulting in 9,079,000 Australians employed. This is a decrease of 103,000 since the March Quarter.
The number of Australians who are now part of the workforce is down 182,000 since the Ma Quarter to 9,898,000.
The number of Australians seeking full-time and part-time work in the June Quarter was 485,000 (down 47,000 since March) and 334,000 (down 33,000) respectively.
Unemployment in regional and rural areas (9.9%, down 0.8%) is still much higher than in capital cities (7.4%, down 0.5%).
Queensland (7.3%) had the lowest estimated unemployment level for the June Quarter, followed by Tasmania (7.8%), Victoria (8.0%), Western Australia (8.1%), New South Wales (8.9%) and South Australia (9.6%).
For the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate during the June Quarter, 13,881 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face on the weekends of April — June, 2004.

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia .
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
Gary Morgan's concerns regarding the ABS Unemployment estimate is clearly outlined in his letter to the Australian Financial Review, which was not published!
