51% Now Want Australia to be a Republic, But 61% Would Want a Republic if Prince Charles Were King

Finding No. 3835 - February 22, 2005

With Prince Charles set to visit Australia at the end of February, the majority of Australians (51%, up 2% since 2000) believe Australia should become a Republic with an elected President.

When asked if Australia should remain a Monarchy or become a Republic if Prince Charles were to be crowned King, support for Australia to become a Republic rose 10% to 61%.

Only 30% of Australians supported an Australian Monarchy under the future King Charles, with 9% undecided, a special telephone Morgan Poll finds.

Results amongst electors were similar to results from all respondents, with 52% (up 3% since 2000) of electors Australia-wide saying Australia should become a Republic. Forty percent (unchanged) of respondents said Australia should remain a Monarchy with a further 8% undecided.

Support amongst electors for a Republic with an elected President was below 50% only in Tasmania (49%) and South Australia (47%).

Electors in New South Wales were most likely to support the change to a Republic, at 55%, followed by electors in Queensland (52%). Support for an Australian Republic was at 51% in both Victoria and Western Australia .

With any successful referendum requiring a majority in at least four States, and the bulk of undecided electors usually voting ‘No’ in referenda, the current mood in Australia would only just support a change to an Australian Republic .

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on the evenings of February 16/17, 2005, with 622 respondents aged 14 and over, including 547 electors, Australia-wide.

Q2. Should Australia remain a Monarchy if Prince Charles were crowned King?

Respondents who answered ‘Monarchy’ or ‘Undecided’ in Question 1 were then asked:   “If Prince Charles were to be crowned King, in your opinion, should Australia remain a MONARCHY - or become a REPUBLIC with an elected President?"

The following table shows that of all people surveyed, only 30% would support a Monarchy with Prince Charles as Head of State.
