Australian Opinion Leaders Disagree with Proposed IR Reforms
Almost seven-in-ten (68%) of Australia’s Opinion Leaders disagree with the proposed Industrial Relations reforms, a special Roy Morgan Survey of Opinion Leaders (covering 16 industries) shows . Australia ’s Opinion Leaders are more likely to disagree with the proposed Industrial Relations reforms than the average Australian. A recent Morgan Poll* found that 55% of Australians aged over 14 disagree with the reforms, while 23% agree and 22% can’t say. Although overall less than a third (32%) of Opinion Leaders agree with the proposed reforms, a majority of those Opinion Leaders working in the Agricultural (64%) and Manufacturing (55%) industries agree with the proposed changes. Those Opinion Leaders working in Construction were fairly evenly divided with 46% agreeing with the proposed Industrial Relations reforms and 54% disagreeing. Large majorities of Opinion Leaders working in Education (87%), Health (83%) and Media/Communications (79%) disagree with the proposed reforms. The majority (65%) of Opinion Leaders are also of the view that the proposed Industrial Relations reforms will be a bad thing for Australia , as are 49% of all Australians. Again, the majority of Opinion Leaders working in the Agricultural and Manufacturing industries defy this view, with 73% and 55% respectively thinking the proposed reforms will be a good thing for Australia . About 1-in-5 Opinion Leaders working in Health (19%), Education (19%) or Media/Communications (21%) believe the proposed reforms will be a good thing for Australia . The on-line Roy Morgan Opinion Leaders Poll was conducted October 13-18 with 1,439 Opinion Leaders Australia-wide. The telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on the evenings of October 12/13, 2005, with 662 respondents aged 14 and over Australia-wide. The Opinion Leaders sample was drawn from the ‘top end’ of Roy Morgan Single Source - a well constructed Australia-wide sample of people of income $80,000+ or in the top occupational categories, and included booster samples from Henry Thornton Readers, Crikey! Their responses are included. Agree Or Disagree With Industrial Relations Reforms? Respondents were asked: “Do you agree or disagree with the proposed Industrial Relations reforms?”
