Nine in Ten Australian Opinion Leaders Think Government Not Doing Enough About Water Conservation

Finding No. 3916 - October 22, 2005

Water conservation leads the list of things Australia’s Opinion Leaders think the Federal Government should be doing more about - 91% say not enough is being done on this issue, while only 9% think the Government is doing enough, a special Roy Morgan Opinion Leaders' Survey finds.

A recent Morgan Poll found that 80% of Australians aged over 14 believe the Government is not doing enough in relation to water conservation — 18% considered enough was being done and 2% were unable to say.

While there is consensus on the issue of water conservation, Australia’s Opinion Leaders are divided on whether or not the Government is doing enough about Bird Flu — 53% think the Government is doing enough on this issue while 47% think the Government is not doing enough.  Those in the Property sector (65%), health and manufacturing industries (each 53%), and Media and communications (52%) are most likely to consider the Federal Government is not doing enough about Bird Flu.

Opinion Leaders are also divided as to whether or not the Government is doing enough about bushfires — 54% think enough is being done on the issue, but 46% think more needs to be done — those working in construction (58%) and education (57%) are particularly likely to believe more needs to be done on this issue.

The majority of Opinion Leaders believe the Government is doing enough on the issues of Terrorism in Australia (80%), a major earthquake (77%) and a Tsunami-like disaster (75%).

The on-line Roy Morgan Opinion Leaders Survey was conducted October 13-19 with 1,444 Opinion Leaders Australia-wide.  The telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on the evenings of October 12/13, 2005, with 662 respondents aged 14 and over Australia-wide.

The Opinion Leaders sample was drawn from the ‘top end’ of Roy Morgan Single Source - a well constructed Australia-wide sample of people of income $80,000+ or in the top occupational categories, and included booster samples from Henry Thornton Readers, Crikey! Readers, Australian Institute of International Affairs Members, Marcus Oldham Associates, Davos Connection Associates and the Australian American Association Members.
