The Race That Stops A Nation – 10 Million Australians Watched Melbourne Cup Live On TV

Finding No. 3926 - November 04, 2005

More than 10 million Australians (63% of Australians aged 14 and over) watched the Melbourne Cup live on television last Tuesday, and more than 11 million Australians (69%) watched a replay of the race. More than 14 million Australians (85%) watched the Melbourne Cup on television live or replayed.

More women (66%) tuned in to watch the race live on television than men (58%). With the exception of Australians under 18 (53%), as Australians get older their likelihood of watching the Cup on television increases: 51% of Australians aged 18-24 watched the race increasing progressively to 74% of those aged 65 and over. These are the main findings of a special Morgan Poll on the Melbourne Cup

Australians in metropolitan areas (67%) were more likely to watch the Cup on television than those in the country (55%), Tasmanians (44%) were least likely of all Australians to watch the race. The television audience for the race was highest in Melbourne (70% - 2.1 million), followed by Sydney (69% - 2.4 million).

Almost seven-in-ten Australians (69%) watched a replay of the race on television whereas less than half (44% - more than 7 million) read about the race in a newspaper.

Of those watching a replay of the Melbourne Cup on television 34% of them hadn’t seen it live. Of those who read about the Cup in a newspaper only 25% of them hadn’t seen it live.

Including those who watched or read about the Melbourne Cup after it had been run almost 15 million (89%) Australians either attended the Melbourne Cup, watched it live, watched a replay on television or read about it in a newspaper.

The Melbourne Cup is truly the race that stops the Nation ” Gary Morgan said today. “ With almost two-thirds of Australians watching the race live and seven-in-ten watching it replayed later — reaching in total more than 14 million Australians (85%) — the Melbourne Cup is a remarkable international event for Melbourne .

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted November 2/3, 2005 with an Australia-wide cross section of 653 men and women aged 14 and over.
