8.5 Million Watched The Socceroos Beat Uruguay In Pubs, Public Spaces And Homes Around Australia
Almost 8.5 million Australians (51% of the population aged 14 and above) watched the Second Leg of Australia’s World Cup Qualifier against Uruguay last Wednesday evening, while just over 4 million Australians (24%) watched the First Leg in the early hours of the previous Sunday morning. In total, just over 9 million Australians (54%) watched some of either the First or Second Leg of the World Cup Qualifier, according to a special telephone Roy Morgan Survey. Twenty-six percent of Australians (almost 4.4 million) watched the entire Second Leg, played in Sydney , including the 30 minutes of Extra Time and the dramatic Penalty Shootout. Viewing peaked in the Second Half with 6.4 million Australians (39%) watching, though this number fell to 5.6 million Australians (33%) who watched Extra Time. At the climax of the match, the Penalty Shootout, the audience grew to over 6.3 million Australians (37%). Across capital cities, the highest viewing audience for the Second Leg was in Sydney where almost 2.3 million people watched, followed by just under 1.7 million people who watched the game in Melbourne . In Perth , 597,000 tuned in while 461,000 and 446,000 watched in Brisbane and Adelaide respectively. Gary Morgan says: “The ‘official TV ratings’, which suggest an average audience of 2.5 million mainland capital city viewers for last Wednesday’s World Cup Qualifier, Australia vs. Uruguay, clearly under represents the real size of the TV audience - with almost 8.5 million Australians watching at least some of the game and just under 4.4 million watching the whole game. Obviously the ‘official TV ratings’ did not take into account the large number of Australians who watched the Second Leg World Cup Qualifier at parties, pubs, social clubs, and in public spaces around the country. Though the audience is smaller than the 10 million people who watched the Melbourne Cup , it is a magnificent result for Football Federation Australia .” The First Leg, played in Uruguay on the Sunday morning (November 13) prior to Wednesday night’s game, was watched in its entirety by nearly 2.2 million Australians (13%), while just under 3 million Australians (18%) watched the Second Half. The audience for the First Leg was greatest in Sydney where over 1.1 million people woke early on the Sunday morning to watch the match while 620,000 in Melbourne , 275,000 in Perth , 200,000 in Adelaide and 175,000 in Brisbane also watched the first match. Almost 5 million Australians (30%) watched only the Second Leg of the World Cup Qualifier compared to 540,000 Australians (3%) who watched only the First Leg. Twenty-one percent of Australians (nearly 3.5 million) watched some of both the First and Second Legs while 46% of Australians (almost 7.6 million) watched neither game. This special telephone Roy Morgan Survey was conducted November 17/18, 2005 with an Australia-wide cross section of 640 people aged 14 and over. In contrast to the First Leg, people living in Capital Cities were more likely than those in Country areas to have watched the Second Leg (54% cf 47%).
