Australians Still Believe Government Should Be Doing More About Water Conservation

Finding No. 3985 - March 01, 2006

Water Conservation still leads the list of things Australians think the Federal Government should be doing more about, however the proportion of Australians saying the Government should be doing more on this issue has fallen 12% to 68%, since October 2005, whilst 29% (up 11%) say the Government is doing enough and 3% (up 1%) are unable say, according to a special telephone Morgan Poll.

Despite recent bushfires in the Southern States, the proportion of Australians who believe the Government is doing enough to prepare Australians for Bushfires has risen 4% to 53%, with  43% (down 4%) believing the Government should be doing more and 4% (unchanged) unable to say.  Tasmanians are the most concerned about Bushfires, with a majority (60%, up 10%) saying the Government should be doing more to prepare Australians for Bushfires, followed by Queensland (48%, unchanged), Victoria (45%, down 2%), South Australia/Northern Territory (44%, down 12%), Western Australia (43%, up 6%) and New South Wales (39%, down 7%).

An increased number of Australians (up 3% to 66%) believe the Government should be doing more to prepare Australians for Illegal drugs in Australia, whilst 29% (down 1%) believe the Government is doing enough on this issue and 5% (down 2%) cant say.

The majority of Australians believe the Government is doing enough on the issues of Terrorism in Australia (up 12% to 66%), Bird Flu (up 9% to 55%), A Tsunami-like disaster (up 3% to 55%) and a Major Earthquake (up 1% to 51%).

Gary Morgan Says:

“Australians are clearly still concerned about Water Conservation, with 68% of Australians believing the Government should be doing more on this issue.  However Government advertising and initiatives have been successful, with this figure down 12% from a high 80% in October 2005.

“Since the execution of Van Nguyen and the trials and convictions of the Bali Nine, Australians are more concerned about Illegal Drugs in Australia with 66% (up3%) of Australians believing the Government should be doing more to prepare Australians for Illegal drugs in Australia.

“It should be of concern to those involved in the recent Victorian bushfires (the worst in many years) that only 45% (down 2%) of Victorians believe the Government should be doing more on this issue.  The Victorian Government and groups such as the Stretton Group need to be more vocal with promotion of bushfire awareness and prevention.”

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on the evenings of February 22-23, 2006, with an Australia-wide sample of 656 respondents aged 14 and over.

Yesterday in Federal Parliament, Government Deputy Whip Stewart McArthur, delivered a speech decrying the lack of action by the Victorian Labor Government to reduce the impacts of bushfires in the State:

“There were two lives lost in the Victorian fires. This is a needless tragedy. The worst thing about these disasters is knowing that more could have been done to prevent the damage, loss of environmental assets, loss of private property, livestock and human life.”

Is The Australian Government Doing Enough?

Respondents were asked: Some people say the Australian Government is doing enough on issues which concern Australia, while others say not enough is being done.  As I say each issue please say if you think the Australian Government is doing enough or if you think it should be doing more to prepare Australians for …..”
