QLD: 70% Of Queenslanders Say Beattie Better Premier

Finding No. 4010 - April 13, 2006

A large majority of Queensland voters (70%) think Premier Peter Beattie would make a better Premier than Lawrence Springborg a special Roy Morgan telephone survey finds.  Twenty per cent of voters think Mr Springborg would make a better Premier while 10% couldn’t say.  An overwhelming majority of ALP supporters (92%) think Mr Beattie is the better Premier. Surprisingly, more Liberal-National Party supporters think Mr Beattie would be a better Premier than Mr Springborg (41% cf. 39%), while 20% couldn’t say.

Mr Beattie’s popularity was further confirmed by 62% of voters saying they approve of the way he is handling his job as Premier, 32% disapprove while 6% couldn’t say.  A majority of voters (55%) want Mr Beattie to lead the ALP to the next State election, followed by Anna Bligh (25%) and Rod Welford (5%).

Less than half of the voters (42%) approve of the way Mr Springborg is handling his job as Opposition Leader, 37% disapprove and 21% couldn’t say.  Mr Springborg, however, is the preferred candidate for the National Party leadership (47%), followed by Fiona Simpson (10%), Kevin Lingard (7%) and Mike Rowell (2%).

Gary Morgan says:

“Peter Beattie continues to be one of Australia’s most popular Premiers, an overwhelming majority of Queenslanders (70%) think he would make a better Premier than Lawrence Springborg.  

Despite criticism over the speed of the Government’s response to Cyclone Larry, 62% of Queensland voters approve of the job Mr Beattie is doing as Premier compared to 42% for Mr Springborg as Opposition Leader.  Mr Springborg retains the support of 47% of Queensland voters to lead the Nationals to the next election, while Fiona Simpson is preferred by 10% followed by Kevin Lingard with 7%.”

This special Roy Morgan telephone survey was conducted on the evenings of March 29/30 and April 5/6, 2006 with a Queensland-wide cross section of 235 men and women electors. More details are available on a subscription basis.

 

1. - Better Premier

 

Electors were asked: “Thinking of Mr Beattie and Mr Springborg. In your opinion, who would make the better Premier — Mr Beattie or Mr Springborg?”

Support for Mr Beattie as better Premier was highest amongst ALP supporters (92%) compared to 41% from L-NP supporters.  Support for Mr Springborg was highest amongst L-NP supporters (39%).

Support for Mr Beattie as better Premier was marginally higher amongst women (70%) than men (69%) and highest of all with voters aged 18-24 (81%).  Support for Mr Springborg was higher amongst men (23%) than women (18%) and highest amongst those aged 50+ (24%).

2. - Approval of Leaders

Electors were asked: “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Mr Beattie is handling his job as Premier?”

An overwhelming majority of ALP supporters (84%) approve of the job Mr Beattie is doing compared to 35% of L-NP supporters.

Mr Beattie’s approval ratings were higher amongst men (64%) than women (60%) and highest in those aged 18-24 (84%) followed by those aged 25-34 (70%).  Disapproval ratings were highest amongst those aged 50 and over (40%).

Mr Springborg’s approval ratings were higher amongst men (47%) than women (38%) and highest for those aged 50 and over (47%).  Disapproval ratings were even amongst men and women (both 37%) and highest for those aged 25-34 (44%).

3. - Preferred Leader

Preferred Labor Leader

Respondents were asked: “If you were a Labor Party voter and helping to choose the Labor leader for the next Queensland State election, who would you prefer?”

Support for Mr Beattie is highest amongst ALP supporters (64%) followed by L-NP supporters (46%).  Anna Bligh (25%) was a clear second choice as the potential Labor leader for the next State election.  Her support was strongest from L-NP supporters (27%) although still below support for Mr Beattie (46%).

More men (57%) than women (52%) prefer Mr Beattie as the Labor leader at the next State election with support highest amongst those aged 25-34 (59%).

Preferred National Party Leader

Electors were then asked: “If you were a National Party voter and helping to choose the National leader for the next Queensland State election, who would you prefer?”

Mr Springborg is the clearly preferred candidate to lead the National Party at the next State election (47%).  Support is strongest from L-NP supporters (50%).  Only 10% of Queensland voters would prefer Fiona Simpson to lead the National Party at the next State election.

Significantly more men (54%) than women (40%) would prefer Mr Springborg to lead the National Party at the next State election.  Fifty-four per cent of those aged 50 and over would prefer Mr Springborg, compared with 36% of those aged 18-24.
