Support For Expansion Of Uranium Mining Up 13% Following Beazley's "Three-Mines" Policy Backflip

Finding No. 4057 - August 01, 2006

Following Opposition Leader Kim Beazley’s pledge this week to expand Labor’s uranium mining policy, 38% (up 13% from June) of Australians say there should be more than three uranium mines operating in Australia. However, a majority, albeit a small one (51%, down 14% from June), oppose the expansion of uranium mines beyond three and 11% can’t say, a special Roy Morgan telephone survey conducted over the last two nights finds.

Of particular importance are the views of ALP voters, with 38% (up 18% from June) now saying that the number of uranium mines in Australia should be expanded beyond three. An increased proportion of L-NP voters (44%, up 12% from June) are in favour of expanding the number of uranium mines.  Many more men (59%, up 23% from June) say that more than three uranium mines should be operating than women (18%, up 3% from June).

A significantly higher proportion of men are in favour of expanding the number of uranium mines beyond three than women (59% cf 18%).

Gary Morgan says:

“Kim Beazley’s plans to abolish Labor’s long-standing ‘three-mines’ policy is a bold move and one that is likely to cause deep division among the ALP’s rank and file. Some ALP Members of Parliament have already spoken out against the idea.

“The positive news for Mr Beazley is that 38% (up 13% from 25% in early June) of Australians say that more than three uranium mines should be operating.

“Also of importance to Mr Beazley is the increase in support from ALP voters, 38% - up 18% in seven weeks.  This is not far off the 44% support from L-NP voters.”

1. Should More Uranium Mines Operate In Australia?

Respondents were told: “At present the State Labor Governments have a policy restricting the number of uranium mines to three. This week Federal Opposition Leader said that he intends to change Labor policy so the number of uranium mines can be expanded beyond three.”

They were then asked: “In your opinion, should there be more than three uranium mines operating in Australia or not?”
