Support For The Coalition Up Marginally - ALP 53%; L-NP 47%
| Finding No. 4096 -
October 28, 2006 |
Primary support for the Coalition Government during mid October was up 1.5% to 40.5% (down 5.9% since the 2004 election), while support for the ALP was down 0.5% to 41.5% (up 3.9% since the 2004 election).
With preferences distributed as they were at the 2004 election, the two-party preferred vote is ALP 53% (down 1.5%), L-NP 47% (up 1.5%). If an election had been held during the last fortnight the ALP would have won, the latest Morgan Poll finds.
Among the minor parties, support for The Greens was 8.5% (down 1%), Australian Democrats 2% (unchanged), Family First 2% (unchanged), One Nation 0.5% (down 0.5%) and Other Parties and Independent Candidates 5% (up 0.5%).
On the important question of who the electorate “think will win” the next Federal election, 58.5% (unchanged) think the L-NP will win, 28.5% (up 0.5%) think the ALP will win and 13% (down 0.5%) can’t say.
Gary Morgan says:
“With an interest rate rise (on Melbourne Cup day) there will be an immediate effect on the mood of electors, especially considering the L-NP’s last election campaign revolved around economic capability and it’s track record of low interest rates compared to Labor Government’s of the past.
“The ALP is still ahead of the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis (53% cf. 47%) and more interest rate rises will further consolidate the ALP’s winning position in the lead up to next year’s Federal election.
“However, now 58.5% (unchanged) think the L-NP will win the next Federal election compared to only 28.5% who think the ALP will win. When this gap begins to narrow, it will be a clear indication that the effect of interest rate rises is detrimental to the Government’s chances of being re-elected next year.”
This latest face-to-face Morgan Poll on Federal Voting Intention was conducted on the weekends of October 14/15 & 21/22, 2006, with an Australia-wide cross-section of 2,055 electors.
Electors were asked: “If a Federal election for the House of Representatives were being held today - which party would receive your first preference?”
Of all electors surveyed, 4.5% (down 0.5%) did not name a party.

# Sample Sizes under 50 should be treated with caution
Morgan Poll sampling tolerance:
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
