Australians & New Zealanders Optimistic About Job Security - Majorities Say They Could Find A Job Quickly If Need Be

Finding No. 4120 - December 22, 2006

Overwhelming majorities of New Zealand (85%, up 1% in 12 months) and Australian (81%, down 2%) workers say their current job is safe and both are among a group of 14 countries (out of 58 countries surveyed) where a majority of full-time or part-time workers say they could find a new job quickly if they were to become unemployed (New Zealand: 70%, down 1%; Australia 63%, up 1%), a recent Roy Morgan International survey, in conjunction with the Gallup International Association, finds.

Apart from Australia and New Zealand, Vietnam (69%, up 5%), China (53% down 3%) and Hong Kong (52%, up 8%), are the only other countries in the Asia-Pacific region where more than half of the working population believe they could find a new job quickly if they became unemployed.

Three-quarters of British workers (75%, down 7%) say their current job is safe while 64% (unchanged) believe that if they became unemployed a new job could be found quickly.  Half the British population (50%) expects unemployment to increase in 2007.

Strong majorities of American and Canadian workers (both 78%) believe their current jobs are safe.  A significantly higher proportion of Canadian workers (65%, unchanged) say they could find a new job quickly if unemployed compared to American workers (39%, down 21%).  Only 40% (down 5%) of Americans and 37% (unchanged) of Canadians say unemployment will rise in 2007.

The war torn nations of Afghanistan (53%, up 8%) and Iraq (50%, up 18%) have the highest proportion of residents expecting unemployment to rise in 2007 in comparison to other Middle Eastern and Central Asian nations.

Gary Morgan says:

“Both New Zealand (85%) and Australia (81%) are ranked in the top 10 countries for ‘job safety’.  America (78%) rounds out the top ten, while three-quarters (75%) of Brits say their job is ‘safe’.  Iceland (91%) has the highest proportion of workers who classify their present job as ‘safe’.

“Forty per cent of Australians and 37% of New Zealanders think unemployment will increase in the next 12 months. Indonesians (81%), Philippinos (75%) and India (72%) are the most likely countries to expect unemployment to rise.”

1. Unemployment

Respondents were first asked: “In the next 12 months, do you expect the number of unemployed to increase a lot, to increase slightly, remain the same, fall slightly, or fall a lot?”

2. Job Security

Those respondents surveyed who work full-time or part-time were then asked: “Do you think your present job is safe, or do you think there's a chance you may become unemployed?”

3. Finding A New Job If Unemployed

Full-time and part-time workers were also asked: “If you became unemployed, do you think you'd be able to find a new job fairly quickly — or do you think it might take longer?”

Overwhelming majorities of New Zealand (85%, up 1% on last year) and Australian (81%, down 2%) workers say their current job is safe and of the countries in the Asia-Pacific region, they are amongst the most likely to believe they could find a new job quickly (New Zealand: 70%, down 1%; Australia 63%, up 1%).

Apart from Australia and New Zealand, Vietnam (69%, up 5%), China (53% down 3%) and Hong Kong (52%), are the only other countries in the Asia-Pacific region where more than half of the working population believe they could find a new job quickly if they became unemployed.  Indonesia (81%), the Philippines (75%) and India (72%) are the countries most likely to expect unemployment to increase, according to the residents of each country.

3. Finding A New Job If Unemployed

Those surveyed who work full-time or part-time were also asked: “If you became unemployed, do you think you'd be able to find a new job fairly quickly — or do you think it might take longer?”

Workers in Iceland (77%) are most likely to say they could find a new job quickly, followed by workers in New Zealand (70%), Vietnam (69%) and Denmark (67%).  Only 7% of workers in Iraq, 8% in Egypt, and 14% in Serbia, say they could a find a new job quickly if made unemployed.

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
