In Tasmania: Liberal Support Up 6% In December Quarter

Finding No. 4127 - January 19, 2007

During September — December, support for the Tasmanian ALP Government was down 5% to 42.5% — 6.7% down on its 2006 State election result of 49.2%, the latest Morgan Poll finds.  Support for the Liberal Party was up 6% to 34.5% — 2.7% above its 2006 State election result.

Support for the Greens remained unchanged at 17.5% — 0.9% above its 2006 State election result of 16.6%.

If a Tasmanian State election had been held in the September to December period, the ALP would have won.

Among the minor parties, support for the Tasmania First Party was 1.5% (down 0.5%), and Other Parties and Independent Candidates 4% (down 0.5%).

Gary Morgan says:

“Support for the Tasmanian ALP Government was down 5% to 42.5% in the December Quarter, which is 6.7% below its 2006 Election result of 49.2%.

“However, if a Tasmanian State election had been held in the September to December period, the ALP would have won.”

This latest Morgan Poll on Tasmanian State Voting Intention was conducted face-to-face with 1,201 electors throughout Tasmania on the weekends of September — December, 2006.

Electors were asked: “If a State election were being held today — which Party would receive your first preference?”

Of all electors surveyed, 3% (up 0.5%) were undecided on voting intention.

Morgan Poll sampling tolerance:
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
