Federal Qualitative Research Finds: Coalition Supporters Focused On Economy, ALP Supporters On IR

Finding No. 4168 - May 24, 2007

Last week’s Morgan Poll Federal Vote found that primary support for the Coalition on the weekend after Treasurer Peter Costello delivered his 12th Budget was up just 0.5% to 36%. Primary support for Labor was down 0.5% to 51%. The next Morgan Poll Federal Vote will be released tomorrow.

With preferences distributed as they were at the 2004 election, the two-party preferred vote was ALP 59.5% (down 0.5%), L-NP 40.5% (up 0.5%).

As part of last week’s Morgan Poll, Special Morgan Poll Qualitative Research was conducted that asked electors “What could the Federal Government do that would most benefit you and your family?

Key points:

• Coalition supporters asserted that the Government should be focused primarily on keeping the economy strong, maintaining low unemployment and reducing interest rates.

• Other Coalition supporters appealed for a reduction in taxation, including the abolition of the GST, lessening Capital Gains Tax and further amending Superannuation laws.

• A large proportion of ALP supporters stressed the importance of Governmental spending on social and environmental issues such as healthcare, education and climate change.

• As is expected, many ALP supporters said that the best think the Federal Government could do that would most benefit their family is repeal the WorkChoices legislation.

Gary Morgan says:

“This week’s Special Morgan Poll Qualitative Research found that the old barriers between Coalition and ALP supporters are clearly shown to still prevail.

“In answer to the question “What could the Federal Government do that would most benefit you and your family?” Coalition supporters were far more likely to highlight economic issues such as reducing taxes and maintaining a strong economy, while ALP supporters were more likely to draw attention to social issues like environment, health and education, with many emphasising their dissatisfaction with the Government’s IR laws.”

The main recurring theme among Coalition supporters is to maintain the health of the economy:

“The Government should maintain their economic performance, and keep interest rates down.”

“The Government has got us out of debt and we are economically successful — so the best they could do is stay in power.”

“I like the Liberal Party and I hope that they will continue to run the economy well.”

“I’m satisfied with the Government’s performance; they have lifted us out of debt. I hope they keep going.”

“Labor depresses the economy — the Liberals should just stay in power. They’ll keep employment strong and interest rates down.”

“The Government should further improve job opportunity and keep the economy strong.”

One of the recurring themes among Coalition supporters is the desire for a reduction in taxes:

“Tax relief for single income earners.”

“I would like the Government to reduce Capital Gains Tax.”

“I would like the Government to introduce policies that include better tax outcomes for low income people.”

“I think the Government should get rid of the GST, and reduce the tax rates.”

“Continue with superannuation reforms, including getting rid of all taxation on super.”

“Three things: don’t put up the GST, take the tax off petrol and lower personal tax.”

“Tax reform, including lowering the tax brackets and improving the family allowance and child-care benefits.”

A large proportion of Labor Party supporters said that the Government should spend more on areas such as the environment, healthcare and education.

“The Government should (i) Address global warming; (ii) spend more on public school education; and (iii) increase children’s day-care payments.”

“Improve education, healthcare and roads. They should also increase the pension.”

“Do not cut down too many more trees — we have water shortage, climate change and the rivers are dying.”

“The should increase funding to the State education system, as well as increase spending on environmental issues like greenhouse gases and climate change.”

“They should spend more money on health and dental care.”

“The Government should show greater commitment to social justice and fixing the climate change problem, and spent less money on defence.”

One of the main recurring themes among supporters of the Labor Party is for the Government to formulate and implement a new, fairer set of Industrial Relations laws:

“Fix the Industrial Relations laws — they need to be a lot fairer and clearer.”

“Give back our work-rights. Unfair Dismissal Laws, in particular, need to be restored.”

“They need to offer more for the working class person. John Howard has made it easy for people to get fired — we need new laws.”

“The Government should repeal Industrial Relations laws.”

“Get rid of WorkChoices.”

“We need better Industrial Relations laws.”
