Electors 'React' Positively To Costello

Finding No. 4218 - Latest Roy Morgan Reactor results: October 02, 2007

Australians reacted positively to Peter Costello’s interview with Laurie Oakes on the Sunday program in which he outlined his views on a vision for the country and the need for concrete policies and a plan, according to Roy Morgan’s Reactor — the online real time reaction device based on an Australia-wide sample of 483 electors.

See Roy Morgan Reactor.

As Costello quietly articulated the need for a vision for the future of the country that involves dealing with climate change, water, building a first-class education system, keeping the tax burden low and providing work for everyone who wants it, L-NP supporters (Blue line) reacted positively and consistently.

ALP supporters (Red line), who typically react negatively the moment any L-NP spokesperson appears, were just a little below ‘neutral’, but not nearly as strongly negative as they typically are to any L-NP spokesperson or message.

Supporters of both parties responded to type in their reaction to Julia Gillard and Joe Hockey as they criticised their opponents on Meet the Press.

ALP supporters reacted negatively to Costello when he talked about going back to the ‘bad days’ of wage claims, inflation, interest rate hikes, recession and ultimately disemployment, what union Rudd stands for and the need to keep the IR reforms with the fairness test.

Michele Levine says:

“This Roy Morgan Reactor research is important in that it highlights Peter Costello’s potential to engage positively with the Australian electorate — even those from the ALP supporter ranks.  The research also shows the electorate reacting more positively to discussion about the future policies and plans.

“The key issue is how ‘soft ALP’ voters responded to Peter Costello and the various issues he talked about, as well as their response to Julia Gillard and Joe Hockey.”

This detailed analysis of the Roy Morgan Reactor is available for $9,800.
