Roy Morgan Reactor: Garrett Fails To Convince ALP Supporters
Peter Garrett’s interview with Paul Bongiorno on Meet the Press, in which he outlines the Labor Party’s support of the recently approved Tamar Valley pulp mill, failed to convince ALP supporters (Red line) of the merits of such a decision, according to Roy Morgan’s Reactor — the online real time reaction device based on an Australia-wide sample of 467 electors. See Roy Morgan Reactor. As Greens Leader Bob Brown addresses Garrett and Bongiorno with emotive questions such as “Peter Garrett, will you save Tasmania’s forests?” and “Peter Garrett, will you make a stand for Australia’s environment today?” the reaction from ALP supporters goes from neutral to positive, but when Garrett responds, the Red line begins to track back and virtually flat-line just below neutral. Conversely, the reaction from Coalition supporters (Blue line) when Garrett appears moves from negative (where it was for Brown) to just below neutral. Consequently, the reactions from ALP and L-NP supporters run along an almost identical path for about one minute. Only when Garrett cites past environmental policies of the ALP does the Red line begin to work its way gradually into positive territory, albeit marginally, and certainly not to the same degree that L-NP supporters react negatively. Malcolm Turnbull, the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, elicits a sharp negative reaction from ALP supporters when he says the decision to allow the pulp mill to go ahead was “based on science, and science alone”. L-NP supporters react marginally positively to Turnbull’s comments. This detailed analysis of the Roy Morgan Reactor is available for $9,800.
