Coalition Closes The Gap Further - But ALP Still Set To Win Election
| Finding No. 4251 -
Final Pre-Election Morgan Poll:
November 24, 2007 |
The final Morgan Poll conducted election eve (November 23) finds ALP two-party preferred support is at an election winning 53.5% (down 1% from the telephone Morgan Poll conducted November 21/22), while L-NP two-party preferred support is 46.5% (up 1%).
This represents a swing of 6.2% to the ALP since the 2004 Federal election. However, in the crucial L-NP marginal seats, where Labor needs to win 16 seats to win Government, the swing is slightly less (5.2% to ALP).
National Voting Intention
Coalition primary support is 41.5% (up 1%), while ALP support is 43.5% (down 1%).
Among the minor parties, support for The Greens is 8.5% (down 0.5%), Family First 2.5% (unchanged), and Other Parties and Independent Candidates 4% (up 0.5%).
Almost six-in-ten (59%, down 4%) electors think the ALP will win the Federal election, while 26% (up 3.5%) think the L-NP will win and 15% (up 0.5%) can’t say.
A majority of electors (54%, up 2%) now believe Australia is heading in the “right direction”, while 30% (down 4%) think Australia is heading in the “wrong direction” — 16% (up 2%) are undecided.
Currently, 14.5% (unchanged) of all electors say Australia is “heading in the right direction” yet say they would vote Labor if an election were held today. The Morgan Poll considers these electors to be “Soft ALP voters” and believe they are the key to the Federal election.
Gary Morgan says:
“The Morgan Poll conducted last night shows the ALP set to win Government at today's Federal election.
“However, the result could me much closer because the survey in 25 marginal seats (22 L-NP marginals; 3 ALP in Perth) finds the swing is not as large (5.2% cf. 6.2%) and is not going to be uniform across the country.
“John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull should be returned in Bennelong and Wentworth respectively, with the Liberals also a good chance to pick up one, possibly two, seats in Western Australia. However, the Coalition looks likely to lose a significant number of seats in Victoria and Queensland.
“Previous research has shown that about one-in-five electors finally decide who to vote for on election day, so any publicity on the day, or election material at polling booths, can have a significant impact on the 'undecided'.
“Since last weekend's marginal seat Morgan Poll identified the swing to the Liberals in Western Australia, the other polls have confirmed the ‘closing of the gap’ which has resulted in a lot of media attention and comment in the last few days.
“It's unfortunate that the media didn't take more notice of my July 27 (2007) comment stating that electors who refuse to be interviewed in telephone surveys are more likely to vote L-NP than ALP — resulting in the two-party result being much closer:
‘Special Morgan Poll innovative research methods found the ‘voting intention’ of those who refused to be interviewed on the telephone divided 51% ALP, 49% L-NP. This is a significantly closer result than all telephone polls are currently showing’. This comment was at a time when the Morgan Poll showed a two-party result of ALP 59%, L-NP 41%.’
“Although unlikely, John Howard can still do a John Major!”
Marginal Seat Voting Intention

• Victoria: 9.8% swing to the ALP in the four key marginal seats surveyed. The swing required to lose each is: McMillan 5%, Deakin 5%, Corangamite 5.4%, and La Trobe 5.9%.
• Queensland: 10.4% swing to the ALP in the four key marginal seats surveyed. The swing required to lose each is: Bonner 0.6%, Moreton 2.8%, Blair 5.7% and Longman 6.5%.
• South Australia: 4.1% swing to the ALP in the three key marginal seats surveyed. The swing required to lose each is: Kingston 0.1%, Wakefield 0.7% and Makin 1%.
• Western Australia: 3.3% swing away from the ALP in the five key marginal seats surveyed. The swing required to lose each is: Hasluck 1.9% to ALP, Stirling 2.1% to ALP, Swan 0.1% to L-NP, Cowan 0.8% to L-NP, Brand 4.7% to L-NP.
• Tasmania: 9.4% swing to the ALP in the two key marginal seats surveyed. The swing required to lose each is Braddon 1.2% and Bass 2.7%.
This latest telephone Morgan Poll on Federal voting intention was conducted on November 23, 2007, with an Australia-wide cross-section of 2,115 electors.
Electors were asked: “At the Federal election for the House of Representatives on Saturday, which party will receive your first preference?”
Of all electors surveyed, 3% did not name a party.
