Australians & New Zealanders Say Security & Economy For The Next Generation Looks Grim

Finding No. 4257 - December 13, 2007

A majority of Australians (62%, up 6% since December 2006) and New Zealanders (57%, down 3%) say the next generation will live in a “less safe” world.  Just 11% (down 2%) of Australians and 18% (down 4%) of New Zealanders say the next generation will live in a “safer world”, a recent Morgan Poll in Australia and New Zealand finds.

Australians and New Zealanders are divided on whether the next generation will have economic prosperity or not.

When asked “Do you think the next generation will have more economic prosperity, less economic prosperity or the same as now?”, slightly more Australians (38%, up 1%) compared to New Zealanders (32%, up 1%) say the next generation will have “less economic prosperity”. In contrast, 32% (up 2%) of Australians and 37% (down 2%) of New Zealanders say there will be “more economic prosperity”, while 23% (down 4%) of Australians and 22% (up 7%) of New Zealanders believe it will remain the same.

Gary Morgan says:

“Australian and New Zealand residents have little confidence in the security and prosperity that the next generation will encounter. A similar proportion of Australians (62%, up 6%)  and New Zealanders  (57%, down 3%) say the next generation will live in a ‘less safe’ world compared to just 11% (down 2%, Australia) and 18% (down 4%, New Zealand)  who think they’ll live in a ‘safer world’.

“While Australians and New Zealanders are divided on whether the next generation will have economic prosperity or not, slightly more Australians (38%, up 1%) compared to New Zealanders (32%, up 1%) say the next generation will have “less economic prosperity”. While 32% (up 2%) of Australians and 37% (down 2%) of New Zealanders say there will be ‘more economic prosperity’.

“In the New Year, Gallup International will be releasing comparable results from more than 50 countries.”

In Australia, a cross-section of 609 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of November 7/8, 2007.

In New Zealand, a cross-section of 957 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on November 12-25, 2007.

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
