Australians & New Zealanders Say Security & Economy For The Next Generation Looks Grim
A majority of Australians (62%, up 6% since December 2006) and New Zealanders (57%, down 3%) say the next generation will live in a “less safe” world. Just 11% (down 2%) of Australians and 18% (down 4%) of New Zealanders say the next generation will live in a “safer world”, a recent Morgan Poll in Australia and New Zealand finds. Australians and New Zealanders are divided on whether the next generation will have economic prosperity or not. When asked “Do you think the next generation will have more economic prosperity, less economic prosperity or the same as now?”, slightly more Australians (38%, up 1%) compared to New Zealanders (32%, up 1%) say the next generation will have “less economic prosperity”. In contrast, 32% (up 2%) of Australians and 37% (down 2%) of New Zealanders say there will be “more economic prosperity”, while 23% (down 4%) of Australians and 22% (up 7%) of New Zealanders believe it will remain the same. Gary Morgan says:
In Australia, a cross-section of 609 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on the nights of November 7/8, 2007. In New Zealand, a cross-section of 957 men and women aged 14 or over were interviewed by telephone on November 12-25, 2007.

With Australia and New Zealand considered safe countries, will this safety continue for the next generation? Respondents were asked: “Do you think the next generation will live in a safer or less safe world or will it be the same as now?” A majority of Australians (62%, up 6% since December 2006) and New Zealanders (57%, down 3%) say the next generation will live in a “less safe” world. Just 11% (down 2%) of Australians and 18% (down 4%) of New Zealanders say the next generation will live in a “safer world”.
2. Economic prosperity for the next generation? With Australia and New Zealand considered economically prosperous countries, will this prosperity continue for future generations? Respondents were then asked: “Do you think the next generation will have more economic prosperity, less economic prosperity or the same as now?” Thirty-eight per cent (up 1%) of Australians and 32% (up 1%) of New Zealanders say the next generation will have “less economic prosperity” compared to 32% (up 2%) and 37% (down 2%) respectively who say there will be “more economic prosperity”.
Margin of Error The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
The Morgan Poll is conducted by the ONLY Australian and New Zealand member of the Gallup International Association. No other public opinion poll taken in Australia has this qualification. |
