Unemployment now 6% - virtually unchanged in March Quarter

Latest Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate:

During the March 2008 Quarter the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate dropped marginally, down 0.1% to 6.0%. This result is down a significant 1.2% from the March 2007 result of 7.2%.
The number of employed Australians has increased by 25,000 to 10,050,000 since the December 2007 Quarter.
The number of Australians who are part of the workforce (ie. employed or looking for work) was up 24,000 to 10,696,000 — this is 211,000 above the March 2007 figure.
The number of full-time employees increased by 9,000 to 6,961,000, while the number of Australians employed part-time increased by 16,000 to 3,089,000.
The number of Australians looking for work in the March 2008 Quarter was 646,000 — down just 1,000 from the December result.
The number of Australians seeking full-time employment is 366,000 (up 36,000), while 280,000 Australians (down 37,000) were seeking part-time work.
Unsurprisingly, Western Australia (4.7%) had the lowest estimated unemployment, followed by New South Wales (5.2%), Victoria (5.9%), Queensland (7.4%), South Australia and Tasmania (both 8.0%).

“The Rudd Government should be pleased that real unemployment at 6% is little changed from the December Quarter — but it’s too early to see the effect of the 0.5% interest rate rises during this period.
“What should be concerning the Rudd Government is the 1.5 million Australians looking for work, or looking for more work, as clearly explained by Michele Levine in her paper that was recently presented to the National Press Club — this is both an opportunity and a threat.
“The Rudd Government needs to take this into account when framing next month’s May Budget — it was recently explained very clearly by both Tim Colebatch (“Frontier of full employment is a long way off”, The Age, February 18) and Martin Fell (“Figures that just don’t add up”, The Age, April 7).”
The March Quarter Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is based on 13,112 face-to-face interviews on the weekends during January, February and March 2008 with Australians aged 14 and over.

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia .
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
