Rudd’s travelling ways don’t impress Australian electors

ALP electors say Turnbull is “Arrogant & Rude”

Finding No. 4332 - This Special Morgan Poll on ‘Concerns’ about the ALP and L-NP parties and their respective leaders Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull was conducted on October 15-16, 2008, with an Australia-wide cross-section of 590 electors.: October 31, 2008

Special Morgan Poll ‘Qualitative Research’, conducted on October 15-16, 2008, asked electors to describe the ‘concerns’ they have for the way the ALP Government and L-NP Opposition are handling their jobs, and their concerns for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull’s job performance.

When asked “What, if anything, ‘concerns’ you about the way Kevin Rudd is handling his job as Prime Minister?” electors are most concerned about Rudd’s travelling with 11.5% (up 10% since June) of Australian electors concerned that Rudd travels too much and is too focused on matters overseas, while not focused enough on Australia.

National Party supporters (25.5%, up 20.5%) and Liberal Party supporters (17%, up 15%) are the most concerned about Rudd’s overseas focus while 8% (up 7%) of ALP supporters are concerned the Prime Minister is concentrating too much on overseas matters.

Australian electors (8%, up 3.5% since June) are also concerned that Kevin Rudd is relying too much on committees, and there is ‘too much talk/ Inaction.’ L-NP supporters (12.5%, up 4.5%) are far more concerned than ALP supporters (5%, up 2.5%) that Rudd is doing ‘too much talking, not enough action.’

When asked, “What, if anything, ‘concerns’ you about the way Malcolm Turnbull is handling his job as Opposition Leader?” 21% of electors cited various Leadership concerns’ about Malcolm Turnbull. These included Turnbull being Arrogant/ Rude/ Patronising (6%), Honesty/ Don’t trust him/ Broken Promises (3%) and Disunity/ Party instability/ Infighting (2.5%).

Overall, only 33% of electors mentioned ‘Concerns’ about Malcolm Turnbull, the lowest for any of the four questions. Many electors also mentioned it was “Too early to tell” (4%) — including 7% of Liberal Party supporters and 9.5% of National Party supporters.

When asked “What, if anything, ‘concerns’ you about the way the Labor Government in Canberra is now running the country?” electors (17.5%) are most ‘concerned’ about the ALP Government’s ‘Leadership’ during these testing times. L-NP supporters (28%) are particularly concerned about the ALP Government’s leadership compared to only 11.5% of ALP supporters and 10% of Greens supporters.

Another significant issue for many Australian electors is the ALP Government’s ‘Economic Management’ with 13% (up 3%) of electors concerned about the Government’s handling of economic issues. There is again a large difference on party lines with 19% (up 6.5%) of L-NP supporters ‘concerned’ about the Government’s ‘Economic Management’ compared to only 9% (unchanged) of ALP supporters.

Despite petrol prices still being at historically high levels, Australian electors are clearly less concerned about petrol prices than they were only four months ago. Only 0.5% of electors expressed concern about the ALP Government’s handling of petrol prices — well down on the 9% of electors concerned about the Government’s handling of the high cost of fuel in June.

When asked “What, if anything, ‘concerns’ you about the way the Liberal-National Coalition in Canberra is now handling its job in Opposition?”, the biggest single concern (7.5%) for electors is Disunity/ Party instability/ Disarray/ Infighting/ Lack of party support/ No organisation. Although this is still the biggest concern, it is down substantially since June (16.5%) when Brendan Nelson was Opposition Leader.

The second most prominent concern for electors (6.5%, down 0.5%) with the Liberal-National Coalition is Negativity/ shifting blame/ stuck in the past/ muckraking, a concern for 9% (unchanged) of ALP supporters, though only 2% (down 1.5%) of L-NP supporters.

This Special Morgan Poll on ‘Concerns’ about the ALP and L-NP parties and their respective leaders Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull was conducted on October 15-16, 2008, with an Australia-wide cross-section of 590 electors.
