Consumer Confidence at lowest level since November 2006

The February Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is 115.8, down 2.8 points from January and 8 points below the February 2007 result of 123.8.
The key factor in this fall is an increase in the number of Australians’ who expect “bad” economic conditions in Australia in the next year — now 30% (up 5% since January and 17% since December) — while 36% (down 2% since January) expect “good” economic conditions in the next 12 months.
Just 46% (down 6% since January) of Australians consider now a good time to buy major household items — the lowest result since December 2006 — while 23% (up 3%) say now is a bad time to buy.
The number of Australians expecting good economic times over the next five years is up 2% to 37%, compared to 20% (up 2%) of Australians who expect bad economic times over the next five years.
Forty per cent (up 1%) of Australians expect to be better off financially this time next year, while the number who expect to be worse off is also up 1% to 17%.
Thirty-five per cent (up 2%) of Australians say their personal financial situation is better now than it was last year, while the number who say they are now worse off is unchanged at 25%.
Gary Morgan says:
“The interviewing for the February Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating was conducted prior to Tuesday’s 0.25% interest rate rise, although it was widely reported in the weeks leading up that a rate rise was almost inevitable.
“The 2.8 point fall (to 115.8) in this month’s Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating could have been a lot worse when you take into account much talk about rising interest rates, the January 22 share market crash and the ongoing volatility in international finance markets.
“Earlier this week, Roy Morgan Research released data comparable to the weekly US ABC/Washington Post Consumer Comfort Index. This data showed that despite recent falls in the Australian Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating, Australians are much more confident than our American counterparts.”
This month’s Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is based on 994 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of February 2/3, 2007.
