New Zealand Consumer Confidence Continues to Remain at Record Low

The NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating remains at a record low of 85.4 (down 0.2 points from two weeks ago). The Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is down 46.7 from 123.2 this time last year.
Now 54% (up 3%) of New Zealanders believe they are financially worse off than this time last year - more than double the 25% recorded last June.
Just 38% (down 1%) of New Zealanders said they expected to be better off in 12 months and 32% (unchanged) expect to be worse off.
New Zealanders are more positive about their country’s future, with 38% (up 3%) saying that New Zealand is looking forward to continuous good times during the next five years and 31% (down 2%) expecting bad times.
A low 19% (up 1%) are expecting New Zealand to have good times financially in the next 12 months, while 60% (down 1%) expect bad times.
There was no change in ‘buying intention’ with 48% (unchanged) of New Zealanders saying ‘now is a bad time to buy major household items’ and only 34% (unchanged) saying ‘now is a good time to buy major household items’.
Gary Morgan says:
“The NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating remains at a record low despite the May 22 Budget.”
“New Zealanders have never felt more financially worse off or less likely to buy major household items. This must be a concern for New Zealand retailers, economists and the Government.”
“The Reserve Bank of New Zealand must cut the record high interest rates or risk a recession.”
This Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating was conducted from May 19 — June 1, 2008, across New Zealand by telephone with a cross section of 987 people aged 14 and over.
