New Zealand Consumer Confidence rises to 109.9 (up 2.6 points). Interest Rates slashed by 0.5% to 7.5%

The latest results from the New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating carried out with 1,020 New Zealanders aged 14 years and over between September 1-14, 2008.:

The mid September NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is 109.9 — up 2.6 points from early September and the highest since early March (116.8 points). Despite another rise in the NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating it remains 9.9 points below the level it was a year ago of 119.8.
The rise in the New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating was driven predominantly by New Zealanders’ feeling more positive about their financial situation over the past twelve months with fewer (46%, down 1%) feeling worse off financially than the same time last year and more 31% (up 4%) feeling better off — the most since mid-April (35%).
An increasing number of New Zealanders (46%, up 1%) believe now is a “good time to buy” major household items while 39% (down 1%) say now is a “bad time to buy” major household items.
A majority of New Zealanders are also more positive about the future with 51% (up 2% - the highest since April 2007) saying there will be good times for the economy over the next five years, while 27% (up 4%) expect bad times for the economy as a whole.
Over the more immediate term, 40% (down 3%) of New Zealanders expect bad times for the economy over the next twelve months while 33% (down 2%) expect good times for the New Zealand economy over the next year.
Thinking of their personal financial situation, 54% (up 1% - the highest since early March) of New Zealanders expect their family to be better off financially this time next year while 20% (up 1%) expect to be worse off.

“The Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating for New Zealand has continued its rise of recent months, up 2.6 points to 109.9.
“The inevitable unscheduled September 11 decision by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to cut interest rates by 0.5% has given renewed confidence to New Zealanders.
“For the first time since early 2007 a majority of New Zealanders are positive about the New Zealand economy over the next five years. The turmoil on international financial markets though means the RBNZ must keep cutting interest rates aggressively to avoid a prolonged recession that New Zealand can’t afford to have.”
This Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating was conducted from September 1-14, 2008, across New Zealand by telephone with a cross section of 1,020 people aged 14 and over.
