Down 5.3 points to 97.0 – lowest since August 2008

October 24, 2008 |
The mid October NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating has dropped 5.3 points to 97.0 — back below 100 for the first time since August. The NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is now 31 points below the 128.0 it was in mid October 2007. This rating was carried out on the weekends of October 11/12 & 18/19, 2008, before the decision by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to drop interest rates by 1% to 6.5%.
The continuing fall in the New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is heavily driven by increasing pessimism amongst New Zealanders about economic conditions in New Zealand as a whole over the next 12 months.
Only 23% (down 7%) of New Zealanders expect New Zealand as a whole will have “good times” economically over the next 12 months compared to 61% (up 10%) that expect “bad times” economically over the next 12 months.
Retailers are worried as just 37% (down 2%) of New Zealanders say now is a “good time to buy” major household items, while almost half, 49% (unchanged), of New Zealanders say now is a “bad time to buy” major household items.
Looking further ahead New Zealanders are more positive with 47% (down 2%) of New Zealanders expecting continuous “good times” for the country as a whole over the next five years while 29% (up 2%) are expecting “bad times” for the country over the next five years.
Thinking of their personal financial situation, 52% (down 3%) of New Zealanders expect their family to be better off financially this time next year while only 22% (up 4%) expect to be worse off.
Comparing their financial situation to a year ago, 44% (down 3%) of New Zealanders say their family is “worse off” financially than a year ago compared to only 31% (up 1%) saying their family is “better off” financially than a year ago.
Gary Morgan says:
“The decision yesterday by the Governor of the Reserve Bank Alan Bollard to cut interest rates, by 1% to 6.5%, is a welcome one.
“The fall in the New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating has continued from being at 128.0 in October 2007 it has now dropped another 5.3 points to 97.0 — down 31 points in a year.
“A major cause of the fall is that only 23% of New Zealanders expect New Zealand to have “good times” economically over the next 12 months.
"The New Zealand economy needs all the help it can get to emerge swiftly from this recession with renewed growth.”
This Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating was conducted from October 6-19, 2008, across New Zealand by telephone with a cross section of 946 people aged 14 and over.

Margin of Error
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
