This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘underemployed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – February 2009 and in total 113,610 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,040 interviews in February 2009.:

In the month of February Australia's total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 884,000 (8.0%), up 117,000 (1.1%) since January and 3.2% above the 4.8% figure currently quoted by the ABS for January.
The February figure of 884,000 is the highest Roy Morgan unemployment estimate for a given month for more than three years — since 893,000 Australians were looking for a job in January 2006 — before Work Choices was introduced!
In February 2009 there were 508,000 (up 93,000) Australians looking for full-time work and 376,000 (up 24,000) Australians looking for part-time work.
The Roy Morgan February 2009 ‘underemployed’* estimate was 699,000 (6.3%), down 84,000 on January 2009.
In total in January an estimated 1,583,000 (14.3%) Australians were unemployed and ‘underemployed,’* up 33,000 on January 2009.

# The revised Howard Government ‘Work Choices’ Legislation was implemented in late 2006,
just prior to the time period when the survey began in January 2007.
Gary Morgan says:
“As the holiday period ends, and the global financial becomes more serious in the US (unemployment now 8.1%) and UK the latest Roy Morgan unemployment estimates measured over February 2009 show a sharp jump in the number of Australians looking for work - up 117,000 to a 3-year high of 884,000.
“The latest figures released by the ABS for December Quarter GDP, showing a contraction in the Australian economy of 0.5%, show that the stresses on the Australian economy are increasing.
“It is crucial as Australia enters recession that the Rudd Government supports Australian businesses and eases the access to credit that banks have kept tight despite the RBA’s interest rate cuts - now 3.25%, down 4% since August 2008.
"Last week the RBA should have cut interest rates further by at least 1% and probably much more as fiscal policy is needed to help Australian businesses stop reducing the numbers they employ. While the Rudd Government's 'hand-outs' have helped stop Consumer Confidence falling, now 95.2 - down only 0.6 points in the week, private sector employment is the 'key' to stopping Australia falling into a depression like the 1930s - the Rudd Government has not done enough to help business - taxes and charges (Federal, State and Local) must be cut.
“To help fund this all Governments (Federal, State and Local) need to implement productivity changes not just shed staff, casual part-time workers and contractors - the 'double time' and over award payment Public Service 'rorts' must be stopped - all Public Service wage rates need to be frozen and many cut."

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
