This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘under-employed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – April 2009 and in total 122,421 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,315 interviews in April 2009.:

In the month of April Australia’s total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 799,000 (7.1%), up 24,000 (0.1%) since March, and up 191,000 since April 2008.
The latest Roy Morgan unemployment estimate is 1.4% above the 5.7% currently quoted by the ABS for March.
The Roy Morgan April 2009 ‘under-employed’* estimate is 874,000 (7.8%), up 174,000 (1.4%) on March 2009.
In total in April an estimated 1,673,000 (14.9%) Australians were unemployed or ‘under-employed,’* up 198,000 on March 2009 and the highest since first measured in January 2007.
In April 2009 there were 6,985,000 (up 8,000 on March 2009) Australians working full-time and 3,425,000 (up 170,000) working part-time.
In April 2009 there were 475,000 (up 67,000 on March 2009 and up 214,000 on April 2008) Australians looking for full-time work and 324,000 (down 43,000 on March 2009 and down 23,000 on April 2008) Australians looking for part-time work.

# The revised Howard Government ‘Work Choices’ Legislation was implemented in late 2006,
just prior to the time period when the survey began in January 2007.
Gary Morgan says:
“The increasing unemployment figure (now 7.1%) must not be mistaken for a shrinking number of employed people - foreshadowing even worse economic times to come.
“Rather, the latest Roy Morgan unemployment data shows more Australians working (slightly more full-time than last month, and many more part-time than last month), more people looking for work and a record high level of ‘under-employment’ (i.e. working part-time and looking to work more hours).
“On one hand this result could be seen as a ‘positive’ response on the part of Australians to all the bad news about the world economic crisis. On the other hand as more companies move to 4 and 3 day working weeks, the real number to watch is ‘under-employment’ as Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine discussed in January, 2009 in “Part-time work and under-employment the “numbers” to watch in 2009”
"The real issue for 2009 is employment — and ‘under-employment’ (people who have part-time work and are looking for full-time work or more hours) is as important as unemployment. Unfortunately this issue has not been understood by the Government or those trying to predict the economic outlook for Australia.
"Roy Morgan has for some time been reporting on real unemployment which is higher than the official ABS estimates; and highlighting the crucial issue of part-time employment, specifically focussing on ‘under-employment’ - those people who are working part-time but want to work full-time or at least more hours than they are currently working.
“The special analysis shows the importance of understanding the real employment situation — not just using a single measure that obscures the real facts. Facts like almost 1.5 million Australians who are unemployed or under-employed.”
“Of real concern now — nearly 1.7 million Australians are either unemployed or ‘under-employed’ — a rise of more than 200,000 since late last year.”

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
