# Malcolm Turnbull was elected as the leader of the Federal Liberal Party on September 16, 2008; this Special Morgan Poll was taken with Rudd v Turnbull before Turnbull became Leader of the Opposition.

Gary Morgan says:

“Kevin Rudd’s popularity (60.5%, down 8.5%) amongst Australian electors has retreated in recent months from the highs of last December. Rudd’s popularity at 60.5%, although down is still above the level (55%) it was at the time the ‘Global Financial Crisis’ began with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008.

“The Rudd Government’s initial response to the ‘Global Financial Crisis’ — including $10 billion worth of stimulus cheques delivered to many Australians - resulted in increases for Rudd’s support as Better Prime Minister.

“In contrast, Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull has struggled for support through this tough period and Turnbull’s rating as Better Prime Minister (26.5%) remains below the 30% rating he received in the immediate aftermath of Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.”

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on the evenings of May 20/21, 2009, with an Australia-wide cross section of 873 electors.

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample.
