This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘under-employed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – June 2009 and in total 131,159 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,425 interviews in June 2009.:

In the month of June Australia’s total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 862,000 (7.8%), up 37,000 (0.4%) since May, and up 233,000 since June 2008.
The latest Roy Morgan unemployment estimate is 2.1% above the 5.7% currently quoted by the ABS for May.
The Roy Morgan June 2009 ‘under-employed’* estimate is 967,000 (8.8%), up a large 306,000 (2.9%) on May 2009.
In total in June an estimated 1,829,000 (16.6%) Australians were unemployed or ‘under-employed,’* up 343,000 on May 2009.
In June 2009 there were 6,678,000 (down 399,000 on May 2009 and down 144,000 on June 2008) Australians working full-time and 3,485,000 (up 248,000 on May 2009 and up 148,000 on June 2008) working part-time.
In June 2009 there were 487,000 (down 13,000 on May 2009 and up 143,000 on June 2008) Australians looking for full-time work and 375,000 (up 50,000 on May 2009 and up 90,000 on June 2008) Australians looking for part-time work.

# The revised Howard Government ‘Work Choices’ Legislation was implemented in late 2006,
just prior to the time period when the survey began in January 2007.
Gary Morgan says:
“The increase in unemployment (up 0.4% to 7.8%) is driven by a small increase in the number of people looking for work (up 37,000 to 862,000) and a reduction in the overall workforce (down 114,000 to 11,025,000).
“However, the increase in ‘under-employment*’ is driven by a substantial decrease in full-time workers (down 399,000 to 6,678,000), an increase in part-time workers (up 298,000 to 3,860,000) and an associated increase in part-time workers who want to work more hours (up 306,000 to 967,000).
“The practice of many workplaces to reduce the working week to three or four days, instead of five days, is starting to show up in the Roy Morgan under-employment estimate.
“Under-employment*' is a lead indicator of future unemployment, and other financial problems for Australians.
“The Rudd Government’s Fair Work Act 2009** comes into effect today (July 1, 2009) across Australia. It is uncertain what effect the new workplace relations laws will have on Australia’s unemployment and 'under-employment*' rates in future months.”

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
