This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘under-employed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – August 2009 and in total 139,587 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,243 interviews in August 2009.:

- In the month of August Australia’s total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 838,000 (7.4%), down 23,000 (0.2%) since July, but up 232,000 since August 2008.
- The Roy Morgan August 2009 ‘under-employed’* estimate is 798,000 (7.0%), down 224,000 (2%) on July 2009.
- In total in August an estimated 1,636,000 (14.4%) Australians were unemployed or ‘under-employed,’* down 247,000 on July 2009.
- In August 2009 there were 7,088,000 (up 179,000 on July 2009 and up 104,000 on August 2008) Australians working full-time and 3,444,000 (down 139,000 on July 2009 and up 188,000 on August 2008) working part-time.
- In August 2009 there were 433,000 (down 121,000 on July 2009 and up 101,000 on August 2008) Australians looking for full-time work and 405,000 (up 98,000 on July 2009 and up 131,000 on August 2008) Australians looking for part-time work.

# The revised Howard Government ‘Work Choices’ Legislation was implemented in late 2006,
just prior to the time period when the survey began in January 2007.
Gary Morgan says:
“The latest August Roy Morgan unemployment (838,000 — 7.4%, down 0.2%) and underemployment (798,000 — 7.0%, down 2.0%) estimates demonstrate the strength of the Australian economy despite the pressures of the global economic slowdown.
“The latest Roy Morgan unemployment figures show unemployment has fallen for second straight month from its peak in June (now 838,000, down 24,000 from June 2009) while underemployment has fallen significantly after peaking in July (now 798,000, down 224,000 from July 2009).
“Looking closely at the unemployed shows a large drop in the number of Australians seeking full-time work (now at 433,000, down 121,000 — the lowest since March 2009) while those looking for part-time work has jumped to 405,000 (the highest since February 2007).
“Today’s Roy Morgan unemployment estimates and figures released yesterday by the ABS showing Australia grew by 0.6% during the June Quarter 2009, suggest that the Australian economy will continue to grow throughout the remainder of 2009. This is a very positive outlook considering the recessions being experienced by most industrialised countries in the world.
“The Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence figures released today show that 52% of Australians say now is a ‘good time to buy’ major household items and 40% of Australians expect ‘good times’ economically over the next 12 months while only 24% say now is a ‘bad time to buy’ or expect ‘bad times’ economically.
“The strength of these figures suggests Australian consumers will continue spending and Australia will avoid a recession — this vigour should ensure Australian unemployment does not rise to the levels many had expected.”

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
