# Malcolm Turnbull was elected as the leader of the Federal Liberal Party on September 16, 2008; this Special Morgan Poll was taken with Rudd v Turnbull before Turnbull became Leader of the Opposition.

Gary Morgan says:

“Kevin Rudd’s lead as Better Prime Minister has been cut by Tony Abbott only days after Abbott was installed as the new Opposition Leader.

“Rudd (60%, down 9% since October 7/8, 2009 when opposed to former Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull) leads Abbott (25%), but Abbott has immediately improved on Turnbull’s last rating whilst Opposition Leader of only 18%.

“Approval for Kevin Rudd’s handling of the job as Prime Minister (53%, down 13%) has dropped substantially while many electors remain unsure about Abbott’s performance with 39% not able to rate Abbott’s job performance as Opposition Leader — however more electors approve (34%) than disapprove (27%) of Abbott’s handling of his job, something Malcolm Turnbull hadn’t managed since May 21/22, 2009.”

This special telephone Morgan Poll was conducted on the evenings of December 2/3, 2009, with an Australia-wide cross section of 597 electors.

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample.
