The First Measure of Consumer Confidence in 2009 is Up

Weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence up sixth week in a row to 104.1 in the New Year;

Highest since March 2008


Article No. 834 - This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 981 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of January 3/4, 2009.: January 09, 2009

The first Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence in 2009, sixth in a row up, highest since March 2008 — still 14.5 points lower than January 2008.

On January 3/4, 2009 the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating rose for the sixth week in a row — up 1.1pts to 104.1. This rise has put the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating at its highest level since March 2008 (109.5). However, the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating remains 14.5 points below its level of January 2008 (118.6).

Early in 2009, 48% (up 2%, and the highest figure for a year, since January 2008) of Australians said “now is a good time to buy” major household items while just 25% (down 1%, and the lowest figure since February 2008) of Australians said “now is a bad time to buy.”

Considering Australian economic conditions over the next five years 35% (up 2%, and the highest figure since February 2008) of Australians expected continuous “good times” for Australia compared to 19% (unchanged) expecting “bad times.”

Comparing their family’s financial situation with a year ago, 28% (down 3%) of Australians said their family is “better off” financially than a year ago while 31% (down 3%, and the lowest figure since March 2008) of Australians said their family is “worse off.”

Over the next 12 months, 36% (down 1%) of Australians expected their family to be “better off” financially while just 20% (unchanged) say that they expected to be “worse off” and 44% expected their family to be “the same” or didn’t know.

Australians were still very worried about the economic situation for the country over the next 12 months, with 48% (unchanged), expecting “bad times” for Australia, while just 17% (up 1%) of Australians expected “good times.”

Just prior to Christmas, Roy Morgan Research CEO Michele Levine presented Roy Morgan’s latest State of the Nation Report including the new weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating which is a strong predictor of the direction of the Australian economy as a whole.

Gary Morgan says:

 

“For over 30 years Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence has generally been higher in January than in December.  However, until now Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence was always measured only once a month — at the beginning of the month.  The latest results are the first time that Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence has been measured each week during December.

“Throughout December Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence increased each week, and there was some concern that the January rating might be lower than that taken just before Christmas.  This would have been a ‘symbolically’ poor start to the year.  The January 3/4 2008 Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence at 104.1 is a very positive sign — the first measure of 2009 is higher than at any point in December.

“Nearly half of Australians (48% - up 22% since the Oct. 11/12, 2008 low) say “now is a good time to buy” major household items and this is the highest result for exactly a year, since the first week of January 2008 (52%).

“The recovery in Consumer Confidence saved many retailers. We wish everyone a prosperous New Year!”

 

This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 981 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of January 3/4, 2009.

Margin of Error

The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample.  Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
