Post-Budget weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence down 3.3pts to 101.2 Australians now less confident about the future

This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 1,122 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of May 16/17, 2009.:

In mid May the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating fell 3.3pts to 101.2. Despite falling by 3.3pts the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating remains well above the lows of January — March 2009 and is 4.1 points higher than a year ago (May 2008, 97.1), based on interviewing conducted last weekend, May 16/17, 2009.
The fall in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven by a decrease in confidence amongst Australians about the short and long term future.
Just 16% (down 3%) of Australians say we’ll have ‘good times’ financially over the next 12 months compared to 51% (up 5%) that say we’ll have ‘bad times’ financially.
In the longer-term, 36% (down 3%) of Australians expect Australia to have ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 22% (up 3%) of Australians that expect ‘bad times.’
Now 36% (down 2 %) of Australians expect their family to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year compared to 19% (up 2%) of Australians that expect their family to be ‘worse off financially.’
Looking back over the last year 25% (down 1%) of Australians say that their family is ‘better off financially’ than a year ago compared to 34% (down 1%) that say their family is ‘worse off financially.’
Nearly half of Australians, 47% (up 1%) say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 28% (unchanged) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.
Gary Morgan says:
“The weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating (down 3.3pts to 101.2) is slightly down but remains well above the yearly low of 92.0 (January 24/25, 2009) after Wayne Swan delivered the Rudd Government’s second Budget.
“Confidence has dropped in all forward-looking indicators with just 16% (down 3%) of Australians expecting ‘good times’ financially for Australia as a whole over the next 12 months while 36% (down 3%) expect ‘good times’ for Australia over the next five years.
“Despite the recent rally in the Australian share-market (at near six-month highs) and Australian dollar (at a seven-month high near 80USc), the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating shows Australians are still very worried about the economic uncertainty over the year ahead.”
