Weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence up 5.1 points to 113.9 Highest Rating since February 2008
| Article No. 896 -
This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 997 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of June 20/21, 2009.:
June 25, 2009 |
In late June the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is 113.9 (up 5.1 points in a week). The weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is 23.2 points higher than June 2008 (90.7), based on interviewing conducted last weekend, June 20/21, 2009.
This week’s rise in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is driven by decreasing worries amongst Australians regarding the next 12 months.
Fewer Australians say we’ll have ‘bad times’ financially over the next 12 months (31%, down 12% this week and down 27% since May 2/3, 2009 and the lowest since March 2008) compared to 27% (up 3% and up 15% since May 2/3, 2009 and the highest since March 2008) of Australians that say we’ll have ‘good times.’
Now only 15% (down 3%) of Australians expect their family to be ‘worse off financially’ this time next year compared to 39% (unchanged) of Australians that expect their family to be ‘better off financially.’
Looking back over the last year 32% (down 4%) of Australians say that their family is ‘worse off financially’ than a year ago compared to 25% (up1%) that say their family is ‘better off financially.’
In the longer-term, only 13% (down 5% - and the lowest since February 2005) of Australians expect ‘bad times’ economically over the next five years compared to 44% (down 3%) that expect Australia to have ‘good times.’
Half Australians, 50% (down 1%) say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 25% (down 2%) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.
Gary Morgan says:
“Although there was a slight pull back last week (June 13/14 — 108.8, down 2.0pts), the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence has followed an upward trend since a low on May 2/3, 2009 — 97.3 — just prior to Wayne Swan handing down the Rudd Government’s second Federal Budget.
“The rise in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven by decreasing worries amongst Australians about the next 12 months. For the first time since early 2008, less than a third (31%, down 12% this week) of Australians expects ‘bad times’ economically over the year ahead.
“The increasing confidence Australians have about the next 12 months is the Australian economy’s best defence against sliding into a renewed slowdown as global growth remains subdued.”
This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 997 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of June 20/21, 2009.

Margin of Error
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
