New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence falls 1.8 pts to 112.3
| Article No. 921 -
This Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating was conducted from August 3-16, 2009, across New Zealand by telephone with a cross section of 1,013 people aged 14 and over.:
August 21, 2009 |
The mid August NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating fell 1.8 points to 112.3. The NZ Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is now 17.4 points higher than a year ago (94.9 in mid August 2008).
This small fall in the New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven by the decreasing confidence New Zealanders have about buying major household items.
Only 37% (down 4% — the lowest since November 2008) of New Zealanders say now is a ‘good time to buy’ major household items while 43% (unchanged), say now is a ‘bad time to buy’ major household items.
A clear majority 62% (down 1%) of New Zealanders expect ‘good times’ for New Zealand during the next five years compared to 13% (up 2%) who expect ‘bad times.’
Now 55% (unchanged) of New Zealanders expect to be ‘better off’ financially in a years time compared to 16% (up 1%) of New Zealanders that expect their family to be ‘worse off’ financially in a year’s time.
Looking back over the past year, 23% (down 1%) of New Zealanders say that they’re family is ‘better off’ financially than a year ago compared to 44% (up 2%) of New Zealanders that say their family is financially ‘worse off’ than a year ago.
Now 40% (up 3% — the highest since December 2007) of New Zealanders expect ‘good times’ economically for the country over the next 12 months while 39% (up1%) of New Zealanders expect ‘bad times.’
Gary Morgan says:
“The New Zealand Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating (down 1.8pts to 112.3) has fallen slightly although it remains well above the 2009 average of 103.6.
“The fall in the number of New Zealanders saying now is a ‘good time to buy’ major household items (37%, down 4%) is a large concern for New Zealand retailers looking for consumers to resume spending and return the economy to growth after 18 months of recession.
“New Zealand’s economy remains in a delicate state and any faltering in consumer spending risks prolonging the recession.”
This Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating was conducted from August 3-16, 2009, across New Zealand by telephone with a cross section of 1,013 people aged 14 and over.

Margin of Error
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
