Consumer Confidence down 2.4pts in a week to 123.2

Consumer Confidence is 123.2 (down 2.4pts in a week ), according to the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating conducted on the weekend of November 28/29, 2009. The Consumer Confidence rating is still 25.4pts higher than a year ago, November 29/30, 2008 (97.8). This is the lowest rating since September 12/13, 2009 (121.2).
The fall in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven by a small decrease in confidence about all components of the rating.
In terms of personal finances, now 41% (down 2%) of Australians expect their family to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year compared to 15% (up 1%) of Australians that expect their family to be ‘worse off financially.’
Of Australians, 44% (down 1%) say we’ll have ‘good times’ financially in the next 12 months compared to 19% (up 2%) that say we’ll have ‘bad times’ financially.
In the long-term, 47% (down 1%) of Australians expect ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 13% (up 2%) that expect Australia to have ‘bad times.’
Compared to a year ago 28% (down 1%) of Australians say their family is ‘better off financially’ while 32% (up 1%) of Australians say their family is ‘worse off financially.’
Now 55% (up 1%) of Australians say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 21% (up 2%) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.
Gary Morgan says:
“The weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has fallen 2.4pts to 123.2 — its lowest point since September 12/13, 2009 (121.2).
“Interviewing for this week was conducted prior to the RBA’s decision to raise interest rates by 0.25% to 3.75% on Tuesday, however it is noteworthy that all five Consumer Confidence components fell this week — the first time that has occurred since January 24/25, 2009.
“Looking closely at the ‘Buying major household items” indicator (which fell 1pt to +34) though shows that although a rising number of Australians (21%, up 2%) say now is a ‘bad time to buy’ major household items, an increasing number of Australians 55% (up 1%) still say now is a ‘good time to buy’ major household items — a very positive sign for retailers in the middle of the important Christmas retailing season.”
This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 1,086 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of November 21/22, 2009.
