Consumer Confidence virtually unchanged – 127.9 (down 0.3pts)

Consumer Confidence is virtually unchanged at 127.9 (down 0.3pts in a week), according to the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating conducted on the weekend of January 30/31, 2010. The Consumer Confidence rating is now 34.5pts higher than a year ago, January 31/February 1, 2009 (93.4).

The slight fall in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven by less confidence about respondents financial situations in 12 months time.

In terms of personal finances, now 43% (down 4%) of Australians expect their family to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year compared to 14% (up 2%) of Australians that expect their family to be ‘worse off financially.’

Of Australians, 45% (down 4%) say we’ll have ‘good times’ financially in the next 12 months compared to 15% (down 3%) that say we’ll have ‘bad times’ financially.

Now 55% (down 2%) of Australians say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 18% (down 1%) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.

In the long-term, 49% (down 1%) of Australians expect ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 11% (down 2%) that expect Australia to have ‘bad times.’

Compared to a year ago 32% (up 5%) of Australians say their family is ‘better off financially’ while 26% (down 2% — and the lowest since February 2008) of Australians say their family is ‘worse off financially.’

Gary Morgan says:

“The weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating is virtually unchanged at 127.9 (down 0.3pts) for January 30/31, 2010. Interestingly, a rising number of Australians (32%, up 5%) say they are ‘better off financially’ than they were at this time last year whilst a falling number of Australians (43%, down 4%) say they expect to be ‘better off financially’ in a year’s time.

“Polling was conducted before the RBA’s decision to leave interest rates on hold at 3.75% on Tuesday — although many economists had predicted the RBA would increase interest rates for the fourth successive meeting. This speculation about interest rates explains why Australians perceptions about the last 12 months and the next 12 months have gone in different directions.

Today’s Roy Morgan unemployment figures showing January unemployment jumping to 7.5% (up 0.7%) show that the RBA’s decision to leave interest rates unchanged at 3.75% has been vindicated. The decision proves that the high level of unemployment and underemployment in Australia — now 14.7% for January 2010 needs to be the RBA’s top priority.”
