This week’s fall in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven by more Australians saying they are worse off financially than this time last year and less confidence about their personal financial situation this time next year.
In terms of Australians personal finances now 35% (up 6% - and the highest since July 18/19, 2009) say their family is ‘worse off financially’ than a year ago compared to 26% (down 3% - and the lowest since November 7/8, 2009) that say their family is ‘better off financially.’

In the longer-term, 41% (up 2%) expect Australia to have ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 13% (down 2%) that expect ‘bad times’ economically.
Of Australians 56% (up 2%) say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 18% (down 2%) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.
Gary Morgan says:
“Weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence has fallen slightly, down 1.4pts to 117.6 as Australians increasingly worry about their family’s personal financial situation. An increasing number of Australians (35%, up 6%) say their family is ‘worse off financially’ than a year ago — the highest level for this indicator for nearly a year, since July 18/19, 2009.
“Despite these worries, Australians remain confident that now is a ‘good time to buy’ major household items (56%, up 2%) compared to only 18% (down 2%) that say now is a ‘bad time to buy’ and 41% (up 2%) expect ‘good times’ for the Australian economy over the next five years compared to only 13% (down 2%) that expect ‘bad times.’”
This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 948 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekend of June 12/13, 2010.

Margin of Error
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
