Consumer Confidence fell 2.9pts to 123.0 according to the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating conducted on the weekend of July 17/18, 2010. Despite this week’s fall, weekly Consumer Confidence is still 8.6pts higher than a year ago, July 18/19, 2009 (114.4).
This week’s fall in the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating has been driven mainly by decreased confidence about buying major household items and decreasing confidence about respondents’ personal financial situations.
Of Australians 57% (down 1%) say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 19% (up 5%) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.
In terms of Australians’ personal finances, now 28% (down 1%) say their family is ‘better off financially’ than a year ago compared to 33% (up 3%) that say their family is ‘worse off financially’ than a year ago.
Now 40% (down 2%) of Australians expect their family to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year compared to 15% (up 1%) that expect their family to be ‘worse off.’
In terms of the economy as a whole 42% (unchanged) say that Australia as a whole will have ‘good times’ financially during the next 12 months compared to 18% (up 1%) that say we’ll have ‘bad times’ financially in the next 12 months.
In the longer-term, 44% (down 1%) expect Australia to have ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 11% (down 1%) that expect ‘bad times’ economically.
Gary Morgan says:
“Consumer Confidence has fallen 2.9pts to 123.0 on the weekend Prime Minister Julia Gillard called a Federal Election set for Saturday August 21 - taking some pressure off the RBA to raise interest rates in August.
“During the course of the last Federal Election — held on November 24, 2007, Consumer Confidence fell slightly (Interviewed on the weekend of November 3/4, 2007, November 2007 Consumer Confidence was 124.9 (down 1.3pts from October 2007) — and just days prior to a widely expected increase in interest rates by the RBA by 0.25% to 6.75%).
“During this campaign Roy Morgan will be measuring Consumer Confidence weekly and will be able to closely track this key indicator over the next four weeks leading into Federal Election day. Consumer Confidence is at a similar level to November 2007 — but it is important to watch the trend to gauge the changing mood of the Australian population.”
This weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating is based on 1,055 face-to-face interviews conducted Australia-wide with men and women aged 14 and over on the weekends of July 17/18, 2010.

Margin of Error
The margin of error to be allowed for in any estimate depends mainly on the number of interviews on which it is based. The following table gives indications of the likely range within which estimates would be 95% likely to fall, expressed as the number of percentage points above or below the actual estimate. The figures are approximate and for general guidance only, and assume a simple random sample. Allowance for design effects (such as stratification and weighting) should be made as appropriate.
