Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence up 4.8pts to 129.0 – highest since February 2010 After RBA leaves interest rates unchanged at 4.5%

Consumer Confidence is up 4.8pts to 129.0 since July 31/ Aug 1, 2010 after the RBA left interest rates unchanged at 4.5% according to the weekly Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Rating conducted on the weekend of August 7/8, 2010. Weekly Consumer Confidence is now 6pts higher than a year ago, August 8/9, 2009 (123.0).
The rise has been caused mainly by increasing numbers of Australians feeling ‘better off’ about their financial situations compared to a year ago and their financial situations this time next year.
In terms of Australians’ personal finances, now 34% (up 4% — and the highest since February 2008) say their family is ‘better off financially’ than a year ago compared to 25% (down 7% — and the lowest since February 2008) that say their family is ‘worse off financially’ than a year ago.
Now 43% (up 2%) of Australians expect their family to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year compared to 11% (down 4% — and the lowest since February 6/7, 2010) that expect their family to be ‘worse off.’
In terms of the economy as a whole 42% (up 2%) say that Australia as a whole will have ‘good times’ financially during the next 12 months compared to 14% (down 3% — and the lowest since February 6/7, 2010) that say we’ll have ‘bad times’ financially in the next 12 months.
In the long-term, 45% (unchanged) of Australians expect Australia to have ‘good times’ economically over the next five years compared to 10% (down 1% — and the lowest since March 20/21, 2010) that expect ‘bad times’ economically.
Of Australians 58% (unchanged) say ‘now is a good time to buy’ major household items compared to 16% (down 2%) that say ‘now is a bad time to buy’ major household items.
Gary Morgan says:
“Consumer Confidence has jumped 4.8pts to 129.0 after the RBA decided to leave interest rates unchanged at 4.5% last week. The improvements in how Australians view their personal financial situation with 34% (up 4%) saying they’re ‘better off financially’ than a year ago and only 25% (down 7%) saying they’re ‘worse off financially’ clearly show that this decision is welcome news to many Australians. This is the best result for this indicator for two and a half years (February 2008) since before the Global Financial Crisis hit.
“There have also been strong rises in the two indicators that look at consumers expectations of the next 12 months with 43% (up 2%) of Australians expecting to be ‘better off financially’ in a year’s time and 42% (up 2%) expecting the Australian economy to have ‘good times’ over the next 12 months.
“This week’s strong Consumer Confidence result means Consumer Confidence has risen in all three weeks of the Federal Election campaign to date and is now 6.0pts higher than on the day the Federal Election was called, July 17, 2010.”
