Australian unemployment falls in March – down 71,000 to 836,000 (7.4%)
Unemployment is still 61,000 higher than March 2009

This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘under-employed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 – March 2010 and in total 169,548 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,415 interviews in March 2010.:
April 01, 2010 |
- In the month of March Australia’s total unemployment as measured by Roy Morgan was 836,000 (7.4%), down 71,000 (0.5%) since February, but up 61,000 since March 2009.
- In March 2010 there were 6,951,000 (down 287,000 on February 2010 and down 26,000 on March 2009) Australians working full-time and 3,472,000 (up 162,000 on February 2010, but up a large 217,000 on March 2009) working part-time.
- The latest Roy Morgan March 2010 unemployment estimate is 2.1% above the 5.3% currently quoted by the ABS for February 2010.
- The Roy Morgan March 2010 ‘under-employed’* estimate is 885,000 (7.9%), up 169,000 (1.6%) on February 2010, and up 185,000 on a year ago, March 2009.
- In total in March 2010 an estimated 1,721,000 (15.3%) Australians were unemployed or ‘under-employed, up 99,000 (up 1.1%) on February 2010.
- In March 2010 there were 456,000 (down 77,000 on February 2010, but up 48,000 on March 2009) Australians looking for full-time work and 380,000 (up 6,000 on February 2010, and up 13,000 on March 2009) Australians looking for part-time work.

# The revised Howard Government ‘Work Choices’ Legislation was implemented in late 2006,
just prior to the time period when the survey began in January 2007.
Gary Morgan says:
“Today’s March Roy Morgan employment estimates show unemployment (7.4%, down 0.5%) falling substantially (836,000, down 71,000 from February 2010) a trend observed in most years — partly explained by younger people returning to University after Summer holidays. This is the fifth year in a row that unemployment has fallen between February and March.
“Although the fall in unemployment is good news, of concern will be the substantial rise in under-employment to 885,000 — 7.9%, (up 169,000, — 1.6%). This rise means the overall level of unemployment and under-employment in Australia has risen by 99,000 to 1,721,000 — nearly 250,000 higher than a year ago in March 2009 (1,475,000).
“Looking closely at the monthly unemployment figures reveals a sharp fall in the number of unemployed looking for a full-time job (456,000, down 77,000). The fall in this measure tracks the rise in part-time employed (3,472,000, up 162,000) and also the under-employed (885,000, up 169,000) — suggesting that many seeking full-time work have had to accept fewer hours than they would like as the condition of accepting new jobs — these figures illustrate clearly that the recovering Australian economy remains in a weaker than ideal position.
“The Reserve Bank meets on Easter Tuesday next week to assess the level of interest rates in the Australian economy. Although there is conflicting news and views about the Australian economy, today’s Roy Morgan employment figures underline that the level of under-employment and unemployment throughout the Australian economy remain elevated well above the levels prior to the Global Financial Crisis and the RBA should leave interest rates unchanged.”
This Roy Morgan survey on Australia’s unemployment and ‘under-employed’* is based on weekly interviews covering January 2007 — March 2010 and in total 169,548 Australians aged 14 and over were interviewed face-to-face including 4,415 interviews in March 2010.

The Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate is obtained by surveying an Australia-wide cross section by face-to-face interviews. An unemployed person is classified as part of the labour force if they are looking for work, no matter when. The results are not seasonally adjusted and provide an accurate measure of monthly unemployment estimates in Australia.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are obtained by mostly telephone interviews. Households selected for the ABS Survey are interviewed each month for eight months, with one-eighth of the sample being replaced each month. The first interview is conducted face-to-face. Subsequent interviews are then conducted by telephone.
The ABS classifies an unemployed person as part of the labour force only if, when surveyed, they have been actively looking for work in the four weeks up to the end of the reference week and if they were available for work in the reference week.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are also seasonally adjusted.
For these reasons the Australian Bureau of Statistics Unemployment estimates are different from the Roy Morgan Unemployment estimate.
